An Act Relative to Toxic Free Kids

An Act Relative to Toxic Free Kids, SD.1507 and HD.2454

Sponsored by Senator Cindy Friedman and Representative James Hawkins

Chemicals that cause cancer, impact brain development, and disrupt hormones should not be in products specifically designed and marketed for children! The Act Relative to Toxic-Free Kids will protect children from early life exposures to toxic chemicals that can cause lifelong health
impacts.

This bill:

  • Requires removal of known toxic chemicals from products made for children 3 and under, children’s personal care products, or items that are put in a child’s mouth
  • Requires manufacturers to disclose to the state if any toxic chemicals are in children’s products they make or sell in Massachusetts
  • Bans PFAS from products made for children 12 and under

“Dear Honorable Representative/Senator,

If you have not already cosponsored, I write to you today to request your support for An Act Relative to Toxic-Free Kids, SD1507 and HD2454, sponsored by Senator Jo Comerford and Representative James Hawkins.

Several chemicals of concern, including PFAS, are used in products specifically designed for children. PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they persist in the environment, and some can accumulate in our bodies for years. Our continued manufacturing, use, and disposal of products with PFAS threaten the health of our children and future generations.

Exposure to PFAS can increase the risk of several cancers, disrupt hormones, and harm brain development in children. Some of these effects can occur at very low levels of exposure.

Senator Comerford and Representative Hawkins’s bills will help do the following:

  • Ban the use of PFAS in products made for children 12 and under.
  • Require manufacturers to disclose toxic chemicals added to children’s products.
  • Establish a process in Massachusetts for banning other toxic chemicals in items that are made and marketed to children 12 and under.

The power to protect the health of Massachusetts constituents from the ill effects of PFAS is in your hands. With each passing day, more and more exposures to PFAS and toxic chemicals occur, and more damage can take place.

Please cosponsor these bills and urge your colleagues to do the same.

Sincerely,”
