Dear Friends in Prevention,
During the month of October messages of “breast cancer awareness” inundate us from all sides. Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) knows that to truly change the legacy of breast cancer, awareness and prevention must go hand-in-hand. MBCC’s priority is first and foremost on prevention to save countless women and their families from having to endure the hardship of a breast cancer diagnosis, painful treatment regimens, and expensive healthcare costs.
MBCC has been at the forefront of advocating for prevention since our inception in 1991, and continues our mission through our award-winning Let’s Talk Prevention: Reducing Toxic Exposures community education program that tours throughout the state; our online environmental health education program for high school students introduced this fall, Let’s Talk Prevention: Actions You Can Take; the MBCC Webinar Series; and, our ongoing environmental health advocacy for state and federal legislation.
The failure to acknowledge and work toward prevention is to seal the fate of one in eight women doomed to suffer a breast cancer diagnosis during her lifetime. Education, advocacy, and research are needed to drive public policy in order to affect change for the health and lives of future generations. During October and beyond, we ask you to think carefully about your contributions and what exactly they are supporting and to make a contribution you can be proud of by investing in prevention.
