High School Student Commits to Breast Cancer Prevention

Charley Lei with former Olympic swimmer Dr. Jane Katz at Against the Tide Brewster 2012

My name is Charley Lei, and although I am only a sophomore in high school, I believe that we all have the ability to accomplish good in our lives through our everyday decisions. I try to live up to this belief in many ways. Over the summer I have intensively done volunteer work, and I am currently still working with a local grassroots organization known as the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC).

Founded when a group of women discovered the alarmingly high incidence of breast cancer here in Massachusetts, MBCC’s goal is to prevent breast cancer through education and advocacy. You can learn more about MBCC when you “Like” them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mbccorg and follow them on Twitter @mbccprevention.

MBCC was among the first to declare breast cancer an epidemic. About 12% of women (one in eight) here in Massachusetts will develop breast cancer. Please support our cause, and help make a difference in the lives of those women.

You can do many things to make a difference. During the summer, MBCC hosts the annual Against the Tide swim, walk, run, kayak fundraising events in Hopkinton (June 22nd) and Brewster (August 17th). I invite you to participate and fundraise with a team of your own or join my team, “Prevention.” Please also consider supporting my efforts with a donation to my fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/charley. Also, the MBCC is very appreciative of volunteers the days of the events.

I believe that it does not matter how old or how young you are. Anyone can make a difference. For more information about creating a team or volunteering at Against the Tide, please contact me at info@mbcc.org.

Sincerely,

Charley Lei
