Goose Hummock Continues its long-term support of MBCC

Brew_284On August 15, the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will be holding its annual Against the Tide statewide fundraising event at DCR’s Nickerson State Park in Brewster, MA. Participants of all ages will swim, kayak, walk and/or run to raise money for MBCC’s work to end the epidemic of breast cancer through prevention.

Phil Howarth, owner of Goose Hummock in Orleans, MA is teaming up with MBCC to support the 16th annual statewide Cape Cod Against the Tide multisport event. Goose Hummock Shop has been supporting the Cape Cod event since its inception 16 years ago under the direction of former owner, Michael MacAskill. In 2013, he passed ownership onto Phil Howarth, who since then, has made the two-mile kayak component of Against the Tide possible by graciously providing kayaks and staff to assist with the event from start to finish.

“I am very pleased to help the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition again this year and I am happy to assist them in their goal toward the prevention of cancer,” says Phil.

Cheryl Osimo, MBCC Executive Director, says: “Phil Howarth’s generosity in making it possible for MBCC to continue having a kayak component at our Cape Cod Against the Tide event is truly impressive. I am also deeply honored by the fact that when Phil became the new owner of Goose Hummock a few years ago, he did not want to change the tradition of supporting our Cape event. Phil’s kind heart and understanding for the need of cancer prevention is evident and is helping MBCC change the legacy of breast cancer for future generations.”

“We are very fortunate to have such tremendous support from citizens of Massachusetts demanding greater protection of their children’s future health in our effort to stop breast cancer before it starts,” says Osimo. “MBCC often is overshadowed by larger, national breast cancer organizations and messages of early detection, treatment, and finding a cure. We depend on our generous media and supporters to continue our unique goal of breast cancer prevention.”

AGTT_183This family-friendly and inspirational event includes several outdoor activities: competitive and recreational 1-mile swims, a 2-mile kayak, a 3-mile walk, and both 5K and 10K runs. Individuals of all abilities can choose to participate in up to three of these exciting components. The event also offers a “Splash and Dash” Aquathon, where participants first “splash” in the competitive swim and immediately “dash” in the 5K or 10K run.

MBCC is inviting people throughout Massachusetts to register for the event at www.mbcc.org/swim or by calling 1-800-649-MBCC (6222). Those who cannot attend are invited to make a pledge to a registered participant or existing team. Participants may register as an individual or as part of a team. All proceeds support the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition.
