THE MARGO SIMON GOLDEN MEMORIAL WEBINAR – ADVOCATING FOR HEALTH TOWARDS A CANCER-FREE FUTURE JANUARY 20, 2022
Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will host the Margo Simon Golden Memorial Webinar – Advocating for Health Towards a Cancer-Free Future, on Thursday, January 20th, at 12:00 PM EST. The Webinar program will feature a panel discussion “An Update on PFAS in Food Packaging”, followed by the presentation of the inaugural Margo Simon Golden Distinguished Service Award. MBCC commissioned this annual service award in honor and memory of former MBCC Board President Margo Simon Golden who passed away on January 21, 2021. The inaugural Award recipient will be Dr. Gwen Collman, Ph.D., Acting Deputy Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
The Webinar panel will feature Dr. Arlene Blum, Ph.D., Executive Director of Green Science Policy Institute, Dr. Maricel Maffini, Ph.D., Environmental Health Scientist and Independent Consultant, and Dr. Laurel Schaider, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Silent Spring Institute. Dr. Jill Oxley, breast cancer surgeon and MBCC Board Member, will serve as the panel moderator. The discussion will focus on the prevalence of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) in food packaging, current regulations, how states and retailers are responding, and what people can do to reduce their exposure.
“We are honored to have such a distinguished panel of renowned scientists for the first annual Margo Simon Golden Memorial Webinar,” says Dr. Barbara Malkas, MBCC Board President. “MBCC continues to partner with our sister organization Silent Spring Institute and others to address the harmful effects of PFAS both locally and nationally.”
Following the panel discussion, the Golden Family will join MBCC in the presentation of the Margo Simon Golden Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Collman. “I, along with my family, believe that Dr. Collman is an exceptionally fitting choice, a true leader in the field Margo was passionate about,” says Neil Golden, Margo Simon Golden’s husband. “I know that she would be proud of this webinar and of this award bearing her name.”
“Margo was instrumental in shaping the MBCC organization that we know today. She had a vision for the role that MBCC could play, not only for the citizens of Massachusetts but for the greater good, says Cheryl Osimo, MBCC’s Executive Director.
“It is a huge honor to be the first to receive the Margo Simon Golden award for distinguished service. I admire Margo’s dedication to the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and her role in crafting the vision of the organization to appreciate the role of environmental exposures in the development of breast cancer,” says Dr. Gwen Collman. “My work in this field has been enriched and strengthened by the hard work of breast cancer advocates, like MBCC, all over the country.”
