15 Years of Dedication

Against the Tide participant Diane Sokal will be participating in the Hopkinton event for the 15th year in a row in 2014. For many of those years, Diane has been a high fundraiser for the cause. Originally joining Against the Tide as a swimmer, Diane turned the event into a personal “Nature Triathlon,” participating in the 1-mile recreational swim, 2-mile kayak, and 3-mile walk. Last year, Diane included a 25-mile bike ride home from Hopkinton paralleling the route of the Boston Marathon.

Fitness activities have been an important part of Diane’s life for thirty-five years, and she sees her participation in Against the Tide as a way to help provide a healthier future for all women. “An ever-increasing number of women I know have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” explains Diane. “The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s (MBCC) work advocating for research into environmental factors causing this epidemic is as important today as it was two decades ago. We will end this epidemic only through prevention, and we must allocate resources to identify and eliminate environmental links to cancer in our water, air, soil, food, cleaning materials, and personal care products.”

“Diane’s dedication to breast cancer prevention makes her an inspiration to all of us. The passion from people like her to leave the world a better place gives us hope that future generations will not have to grapple with this disease as we have,” explains MBCC Board of Directors President, Margo Simon Golden, who has been battling metastatic breast cancer for over 13 years.
