Returning Against the Tide Participant Reaches Out

Dear Friends,

I am walking again this year to raise money to support the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, one of the few organizations nationally that work on breast cancer prevention and the only one in Massachusetts. Due to COVID-19, the event has become virtual this year. Instead of going to Hopkinton to walk the course there, I will be walking 5K on my own in Concord this Saturday, trying to meet or exceed my time last year (45 minutes), a goal I’m not sure I can attain. But, just as people going through cancer treatment have to give it their all, so will I honor them by giving my all. The rest of my team (Laura Diamond’s team) will be doing the event, which can be running, walking, swimming or kayaking, in mid-August. If my joints hold up, I will do the event again then. This is a difficult time to ask people for money, even to support such an important cause as breast cancer prevention, given the current state of our country and in the midst of a pandemic. But please consider supporting and doing whatever you can. No pressure.

Laura Diamond is doing this for the 28th consecutive year. Last year, her team was the top fundraising team in the event. Thank you so much to those of you who supported me and her team last year. Laura is also one of the founders of this event. Moving to a virtual event is super challenging for everyone, but it is an honor to be on her team again this year. Laura is the reason that I can do this at all. She has helped me to rehab from chronic knee problems, a broken ankle, and a total hip replacement, among other musculoskeletal issues. If you would like to be on her team, please let me know, and I can put you in touch with her. Most of the walkers go at a leisurely pace and take their time to cover the distance. Had I been able to run, I would have, and had I been a runner, I would have won my age category with my walking time.

Many thanks for considering this ask and for whatever you can do,
Sally Sanford
