Dear Friends in Prevention,
As a former intern with Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC), I am reminded this October, during Breast Cancer Prevention Month, of the vital role education, advocacy, and community action play in creating safer environments and supporting prevention efforts across our communities.
From the first day of my internship, I was welcomed not just as a colleague, but as a valued individual—and through that genuine connection, I witnessed how MBCC’s work supports individuals and families across Massachusetts and beyond, dedicated to building a future free from the burden of breast cancer.
I am continually inspired by the passion, dedication, and heart that are poured into this mission. I saw how deeply the MBCC team cares, not just about preventing breast cancer, but for the people they work with and the communities they serve. Leading with kindness, fighting for what they believe in, and showing that even small acts—listening, celebrating victories, offering comfort—can have a profound impact.
I was equally moved by the passion of volunteers and supporters, whose energy, generosity, and belief in this work help turn hope into action every day, creating a community of care and determination that truly makes a difference.
Your support helps sustain and expand programs like Let’s Talk Prevention, which bring vital prevention-based education and practical tools to students and communities, empowering individuals and families to take action in their own lives. Your support also fuels MBCC’s advocacy work, helping to advance policies that reduce environmental risks linked to breast cancer.
This October, Breast Cancer Prevention Month reminds us how much prevention matters and how, together, we can give communities the knowledge, voice, and hope they need to create healthier, safer environments.
Every contribution helps amplify this work and strengthens the momentum towards prevention.
I am proud to have been a part of this mission and I know the lessons and inspiration I now carry will stay with me forever.
I hope you’ll join me in supporting MBCC during this October.
With heartfelt gratitude,

Maria Jose Patiño Mejido
Former Intern
