Brewster’s Erin Soby Swims and Walks for Loved Ones Battling Breast Cancer

Erin with her two daughters and her mother at Against the Tide in 2008
Erin Soby of Brewster, MA will challenge herself to complete her first 1-mile open water swim on August 16 at the Against the Tide swim, kayak, walk, or run event. She will swim for more than just herself though. She will swim for her maternal grandmother who passed away from colon cancer, she will swim for her paternal grandmother who is a breast and skin cancer survivor, and she will swim for her aunt who was recently diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. Erin will challenge herself to complete this swim at Against the Tide to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) and their work toward breast cancer prevention.

This isn’t Soby’s first time at Against the Tide. In fact, it will be her fourth. She first participated in the 3-mile walk at Against the Tide with her sister and mother in 2008. She has participated three times since then, but 2014 will be the first year she completes the 1-mile swim in Flax Pond in addition to the 3-mile walk.

“Breast cancer may have won some of the battles, but with a focus on prevention, breast cancer will lose, and we will persevere,” says Erin. “I will swim for my family members diagnosed with cancer and for the future health of my two daughters. That is why I support the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and its unique focus on prevention.”

Against the Tide consists of a 1-mile swim, 2-mile kayak, 3-mile walk, 5K run, and 10K run. Participants may choose one or more of the activities in any combination. There will also be a “Splash and Dash” Aquathlon option where participants first “splash” in the competitive 1-mile swim and then, “dash” in the competitive 5K or 10K run.
