Our best friend Ally Gibely is working as an intern for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. She has informed us of the wonderful cause the MBCC is fighting for and we of course support her and the MBCC to the fullest. We are excited to participate in this event for the very first time.

I had my first mammogram this year and had a bit of a scare. Everything is OK, but I decided to get involved and try to help others who may not be as fortunate.
KIRSTEN, ACTON

I will be participating in Against the Tide for the third time this summer. I am swimming in honor of my mother, Sarah who died in 1997 as a result of breast cancer. My mother enjoyed swimming and encouraged me to learn about and enjoy the water, which makes this event all the more meaningful to me.
AMY, ANDOVER

This is my 12th year participating in this swim.
GERALD, ANDOVER

This is my 10th year raising money for breast cancer research with MBCC/Against The Tide. Since that first year I've experienced friends and loved ones' own fights with this horrendous illness, including my mother-in-law, Helen, zl", who was an inspirational individual and a dear friend. I believe that we have sorely overlooked environmental causes related to the breast cancer epidemic and numerous other diseases. I support MBCC in their keen awareness of those influences and their amazing efforts to fund research accordingly. Thanks for your support. Shira
SHIRA, ARLINGTON

"Live more, laugh more, love more". These were Jayne's words to me when she learned her breast cancer had metastasized. Service to others and an unwavering faith in God-this is Jayne's legacy. Her words and her life continue to inspire me. I will walk so that someone else won't have to lose their Jayne.
KADY, ARLINGTON

What can be better than doing something you love - kayaking - and having all that energy serve double duty? I am paddling for my Aunt, a long time breast cancer survivor who drew strength from the guitar music of John Williams. Hopkinton State Park, the location of the paddle, is a special place in my life. It's where I learned to windsurf, and celebrated one of those milestone birthdays.
ELAINE, ARLINGTON

This is the first time I am participating in this event. I am paddling for my friend Jane and two relatives, all three breast cancer survivors. I hope we can find a cure very soon.
LINA, ARLINGTON

I did this swim a few years ago in honor of my friend Kara who passed away from breast cancer in 2003. Again, this year, I swim in her memory and for all of the women and men who are battling this illness as I type this. Please take a few minutes to sponsor me or consider doing the swim yourself. Yours Truly, Julie
JULIE, ASHLAND

A beautiful wife and mother I know was diagnosed with BC at age 31 and then was further diagnosed with lung cancer and brain cancer at age 32. She received her angel wings about 3 weeks after the Nickerson swim last year. I will swim this event in her memory to aid in the fight against breast cancer. Your support is appreciated. Thanks so much!
NICOLE, ASSONET

It’s 50 degrees out and raining getting in the pool is tough. Kathy’s in! That’s all it took. If she’ll do it so will I. I feel the same way about the fight against breast cancer. I want to be with those who are doing something about this epidemic. Swimming has had many positive effects on my life. I get support from my coaches and fellow swimmers who encourage me in my stride to be healthy. It is a perfect match for me to use my love of swimming to raise awareness and support those who are fighting for their lives. Thanks for sponsoring me.
EILEEN, AUBURNDALE

It's finally almost summer, and time for my annual participation in the swim for breast cancer. I have participated for the last 12 years, missing only the inaugural swim event. Of all my athletic endeavors over the years, none compares to my passion and feeling for this event. As the sole female in my family- from my mom, grandma and cousins on along- to not have had breast cancer this event becomes more important each year. In the time it takes for you to read this message, another woman will have been diagnosed. In 2005, over 40,000 women will die of this disease, more than twice the population of my Town. However, for me, statistics do not tell the same story as the feeling of being within a year or two of the age my mom was first diagnosed. I rely on events like this swim to raise funds for research that I know may someday be used to save my life. Please send in your pledge, and if you are available, come out to Hopkinton. It is a day you will not soon forget, and one that is nothing but empassioned with optimism and hope.
LISA, BEDFORD

Some will walk while others bike, And those with boots will even hike. Some with paddles will steer their boats 'Round kettle ponds on dreamy floats. All kinds of folks will come to see The athlete that they hoped they'd be While raising money for a cause And doing it without applause. My venture comes at summer's end When I'll be swimming 'round the bend In one long mile of freestyle strokes With other crazy swimming folks. Breast cancer strikes 1 out of 8 And some of us have met that fate. But hope abounds 'midst summer's haze And prevention seems the key that pays. The cures are great (tho' chemo stinks!) But what will really put us pink Is knowing that the ones to come Will have the benefit of great sums And that the answers may be sought Before another woman's got... Breast Cancer!
PAMELA, BEDFORD

Why swim? Because we can! And because if we do, maybe some day we won't have to! I hope you will join me in this fun, family event. Last year my son was honored for his commitment to the event- he's been there every one of his 10 years! It was a huge honor, and one his dad and I are quite proud of. Our collective goal really has to be to figure out how, when my son is my age, he doesn't even have to think about going to a swim! On behalf of my mom, my grandma, and all the other relatives who beat this disease, and mostly ME- who has NOT had this disease- thank you for your support! I also really hope you will read the article by US Masters Swimming on my participation http://www.usms.org/features.php?id=123 (you need to copy the entire link, up to where it says 123 and paste into your browser)
LISA, BEDFORD

Breast cancer runs in our family and recently it really hit close to home when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before Christmas. She is currently undergoing treatment and it has really been an eye opener. Breast Cancer not only affects the life of the person diagnosed, but the lives of family and friends who have to watch someone go through this ordeal. Please help us in raising the money needed to help fund breast cancer research. Thank you.
ASHLEY, BELLINGHAM

Join us as we walk in support of MBCC in its efforts to find the causes of breast cancer and in support of MBBC's advocacy for increased research of the environmental links to breast cancer.
MARY, BELLINGHAM

Dear Sponsor, I'ts a great cause and if you know anyone who has had breast cancer, would you consider making a donation with that person in mind? Thank you. Love, Gracie
GRACIA, BEVERLY

This is my first year doing Against the Tide. It looks to be a fun day for a good cause. I will be participating in all three events. Thanks in advance for your support!

With thoughts of my mother-in-law, to help raise money to find a way to fight breast cancer.
JANET, BEWSTER

Jayne has been a wonderful friend and mentor to me and to members of my family for many years. Her love of life, kindness to others, and her tremendous peace are truly inspirational. In memory of Jayne, I try to love life and live every day to its fullest.
DEBBIE, BOSTON

It's been a while since I've been swimming in any serious kind of way, and this event has been exactly the inspiration I've needed to get going again. This will be my first open water swim, and I'm so excited to contribute in whatever small way I can to help find a cure for breast cancer. I'm swimming my race in honor of Denise Green, a longtime friend of my family who is currently fighting breast cancer. Please help me out if you can, in whatever amount you are comfortable. Thanks for your support!
LIS, BOSTON

I am walking for my friend Jayne. She was a great inspiration to me, and I miss her very much.
AMBER, BOSTON

Thank you for visiting my pledge page. I am taking the plunge in the luke warm waters of Cape Cod for a good cause and would like your participation. If you could donate any amount to this wonderful cause that impacts so many people, you would be helping those who really need it. Also, your contribution might help out raising money for those who raise money for those who really need it. Please consider and if you can, please come and join me on August 15th for taking a Plung(er).
GABOR, BOSTON

In August 2001, Lauren Elliott-Grunes was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. This news came when she was three months pregnant with her daughter Katie. The prognosis was bad, and the doctors were not hopeful for the survival of either mother or daughter. This August will mark 7 years of cancer-free victory since that diagnosis. We could not have done it without the support and love from our families and friends. Please help us celebrate another year of life. On August 16, 2008, Lauren and her mother, Sally will join Against The Tide for the swim against breast cancer, as they have for the past 6 years. This year they will attempt to break all previous fund-raising records. Last year we raised more than $4,000. This year we're going for $5,000. Please give what you can. This is a great charity that focuses on promoting research into cause and prevention, and not just treatment of this horrible disease, which affects one in every seven women. Please help us reach our goal. Make checks payable to "The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition" or just "MBCC" and send to us no later than August 12, 2009 (279 Landing Dr, Brewster, MA 02631), or just click on the "Pledge Me Now" link. All donations are fully tax deductible. Thanks again for your support. Peace and love, The Elliott-Grunes Family P.S. Katie is still thriving, and will be starting 2st grade in September.
LAUREN, BREWSTER

Having had a bad scare nearly 30 years ago I have tried to support Breast Cancer awareness whenever I can. I will be doing this walk for some good women that have died over the year as well as all those women throughout the world who have had/will have that bad scary moment as well as those who have fought/or are fighting Breast Cancer.
VALERIE, BREWSTER

Our mother, Alyce was diagnosed with breast cancer this spring. She is among the fortunate and is expected a full recovery. As we unite for our annual family reunion, we would like to help others less fortunate. Please come join us, cheer us on or make a pledge.
LISA, BREWSTER

I have been swimming most every weekend for the past few years, rotating through the breast, back and side strokes while fellow swimmers pass like lightening doing the crawl. I have managed to do a mile when I have the time and energy and it's time for me to swim the talk! What better way than swimming for the women I know who have succummed to breast cancer and for a cure so I don't have to add to that too long list.
MARGARET, BREWSTER

Just over two years ago I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston, and with your help, I raised over $2,000. I have now joined the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, and am walking in their event on Saturday, August 16 at Nickerson State Park in Brewster. The walk is easy - finding a cure and preventing breast cancer is hard. One day I will be writing to tell you that we no longer need to raise money to find a cure - but until that day, I need your help. Please donate a few dollars to my 'pledge page' or send words of support (or both!). Thank you so much and wish me luck! Jill
JILL, BREWSTER

I value the work that the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is doing. My personal goal is to be able to complete the 1 mile swim, 2 mile kayak, and 3 mile walk and raise $150 for a very worthy cause. Please donate whatever you can! Thanks!
KERRY, BREWSTER

Cape Cod Seido Karate is a small community of like-minded individuals seeking to follow the "Sincere Way." Under the patient guidance of Kyoshi Paula Feinstein we practice karate-do as a path to personal growth and self-awareness. We are participating in this event as a team because we are grateful for our health, which is so easy to take for granted, and because we believe in the ability of karate to benefit society by encouraging compassion for others. As individuals we are participating because we, or our loved ones, could be struck by this disease at any time.
DEBRA, BREWSTER

Five years ago, my partner, Laura was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. She underwent two surgeries and a course or radiation as has been in remission for 4 and half years. I am swimming this event for her and for the hope that some day we won't have to have events like this.
MARIE, BREWSTER

Breast Cancer affects almost everyone in some way. I have not had breast cancer, but it certainly has had an impact on my life. Lately I’ve felt a calling to make a difference in prevention of disease. Currently I am a nurse and work caring for patients already sick. I wanted to find something I could help prevent! In my search to help all I really had to do was realize what my patients have taught me. I thought back to a story I heard right when I started my career; in nursing school. The story I heard was by one of my teachers who worked on an Oncology unit in a hospital in Boston. The story she told was as follows. She was working one day, typical of every other day. One of her patients had just undergone a radical mastectomy a day prior, but her prognosis was not good. The patient’s family had just left from visiting her; she had a husband and two young children. When the family left and my teacher went in to do wound care she was sitting with her for a minute and the patient looked up at her and asked, “Why?”. My teacher looked at her and replied “ Why what?”. The patient said “Why me, why do I have this disease?”. My teacher replied, “ I don’t know that answer, but I am here for you and we can talk about this, don’t be afraid”. The patient asked her “What are you going to do when you can leave here in a few hours?”. My teacher replied “Well I have to go pick up my daughter and then throw something together for dinner”. The patient started to cry and said “ Oh how I miss my kitchen, I loved to make dinner for my family, it was my favorite time of the day.” Later that night when my teacher left work she went to pick up her daughter then went to the grocery store and picked up all of the essentials for a perfect dinner, pasta, salad, dessert, wine and even some balloons. As she was making dinner her daughter looked up at her and asked “mommy what is this for?”. She told her daughter “ Oh no reason hunny”. Her daughter looked up at her once more and said “ It’s a celebration of love!”. The point of this story is that even though the patient didn’t realize it, it was her story that made my teacher, and now me, appreciate the simple things in life. Our patients may not realize it, but they teach us and help us just as much as we help them. I hope that by knowing more information about the environmental causes of breast cancer I can limit my risk, and every women’s risk of being one of the one in seven women that will develop breast cancer. Hopefully with this information a few more women can have dinner with their families and appreciate more of the simple things in life.
KELSEY, BRIGHTON

As a member of the Silent Spring Institute team for the last year and a half, I continue to be amazed by the passion and dedication my colleagues have for the work that they do in researching preventable causes of hormonal cancers. I also come from a family of cancer victims and survivors - and I do this to honor them. Thank you, every little bit helps!
ERICA, BRIGHTON

This will be our second consecutive year swimming together and fund raising for Mass Breast Cancer Coalition. This is a great event and I am glad Danielle will be joining me again. I would like to thank everyone who generously supported us last year. Most of us have been affected in some way by this awful disease. We all know someone that has faced this disease. Please help me attain my fundraising goal by making a donation.
DAVE, BROCKTON

I'm doing this to support all women who either have or know someone who has breast cancer (that's all of us!), and in memory of my Aunt Claire. If you can, come join me on the 25th!
CATHERINE, BROOKLINE

I first heard about Against The Tide during my recovery from breast cancer surgery in June 1995. I made a commitment to myself that I would enter the next years event and I have swum ever since, only missing the 2007 event due to surgery and treatments. This year will be my eleventh swim! I am a third generation breast cancer survivor. My maternal grandmother and aunt were both diagnosed and successfully treated in the 1970's. We didn't hear much from this nasty disease again until 1995, when my mother and I were diagnosed and completed radiation therapy together. Fall of 2006 brought the nasty stuff back to us and once again, my mother and I are survivors! I finally finished treatments in February 2008 and I will be ready for Against the Tide! I will swim in both the competitive and recreational swims, but one pledge covers both! So if you love anyone with breasts, please make a pledge and help us erradicate this nefarious disease.
LESLIE, BROOKLINE

This is my 10th year participating in Against the Tide, and my fourth year completing the whole “nature triathlon” – 1-mile swim, 2-mile kayak and 3-mile walk. I have raised over $30,000 for the MA Breast Cancer Coalition in my previous nine swims, collecting many small contributions from family, friends and colleagues who all support the goal of BREAST CANCER PREVENTION. Recreational/fitness swimming has been an important part of my life for more than thirty years, and joining Against the Tide is a way that I can help provide a healthier future for all women. I am concerned by the increasing number of young women that I know who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I support the work of MBCC and the Silent Spring Institute researching environmental factors causing this epidemic. Please support the MA Breast Cancer Coalition and help me realize my goal of raising another $5,000 this year.
DIANE, BROOKLINE

I am paticipating in the ATT event because I know survivors. I also have friend whose relatives have been killed by cancer. GO ATT! -Lydia
LYDIA, BROOKLINE

This will be my second time doing this with my mom. It's a great way to spend time with her, a physical challenge for myself, and a way to raise money for women everywhere who are facing breast cancer. So there's no down side! Your support would mean a lot, so thank you in advance.
SOPHIE, BROOKLYN

Please show your support to help the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition raise money so they can continue to research ways to prevent breast cancer. I lost my mother 10 years ago to breast cancer and I want do my part to help raise money to help find a cure to this horrible disease so that no one else would have to lose their mother to breast cancer!! Thank you in advance for your support!!!!!!!! Karen Swift
KAREN, BUZZARDS BAY

In 1993, my partner, Helen, and I started the Agaist the Tide swim in memory of my mother, Camille, who died of breast cancer in 1978 when she was 42 years old. In the 1970's, there was no such thing as breast cancer advocacy. While undergoing treatments, there was no group of breast cancer advocates and survivors to whom my mother could turn. When I heard about the MBCC, I realized that there were grassroots organizations working to fight breast cancer -- and that there was something I could do to help. So one day, I got together with Helen and some of our friends, and we envisioned an event that would be empowering for women with breast cancer and those who love them. Against the Tide was the result. I will swim for the 13th year in a row in her memory.
MARIA, CAMBRIDGE

I started doing the swim 15 years ago because my mother had breast cancer. Now every year I learn of another friend who has been diagnosed. I am sure you know many women who have had breast cancer as well, some are survivors and some not. It is a epidemic. MBCC focuses on prevention, which as an early childhood educator, I'm all about prevention.
KAREN, CAMBRIDGE

This will be my fifth year participating in this fundraiser. I would like to help in this effort because Breast Cancer issues and women's health issues are issues I care about and swimming is very important to me in my life. It's just something very small that I can do to help with an important cause.
KARA, CAMBRIDGE

For the first time, Helen, Stella and I will all participate in Against the Tide. Helen and Stella will do the walk (and could find themselves in a kayak, too), and I will do the swim. I am so excited that we are teaming up to raise funds for the MBCC! Thank you SO much for sponsoring us!
MARIA, CAMBRIDGE

Last year for My Bar-Mitzvah I needed to do a Tikun Olam (repairing the world) project, for me the choice was obvious I have always heard of the swim and always I said that I would do it someday. My mom, Shari Zimble has breast cancer and that has been a significant part of my life. . I am swimming so that, in the words of the MBCC "no individual or family has to know the pain of this disease.'' I raised over $ 1500 dollars last year (thanks to everyone who made this posable!) I am looking forward to Swimming again this year! Thanks, Davin
DAVIN, CAMBRIDGE

Well, my name is hannah and im 14 years old. I am doing the recreational swim at this event with my mom, Jenifer Firestone. I just really hope we can raise a lot of money and help the people who need it. Thanks!
HANNAH, CAMBRIDGE

I am participating in 2009 MBCC Against The Tide Swim, in honor of my Aunt Dorothea Marvelous Punch. As a young child she had no trouble convincing me that the middle initial M in her name was for Marvelous.... after all she was simply stating the obvious :) Those of you that knew her, understand. The world lost some lightness in March when Dotty surrendered her 2 1/2 year long battle with breast cancer. Please help me help MBCC continue to fight to ELIMINATE breast cancer -- let's end this epidemic before it affects another generation by sponsoring my swim for the Against The Tide fund raiser. I understand that times are difficult for people right now. If you are able to make a contribution it will be used to continue the fight!! Thank you !!!
VICKI, CANTON

I've always wanted to make a difference in someones life..I believe this is a good start.
KRISTINE, CARVER

My name is Hannah and I am nine years old. I am doing this walk because my Gramma Sue is a six year survivor. I'm doing this for her because I love her and want her to get better. She is a strong and brave person. Thank you for visiting this site and sponsoring me, my mom and aunt. Everyone--have fun kayaking, swimming, or walking. Tootles!
HANNAH, CENTERVILLE

My reasons for contributing to this cause are simple: Awareness and Prevention are two key elements in lowering the number of cases of breast cancer.
LAURIE, CENTERVILLE

Hannah, 10, first saw the posters 2 years ago at Sea St. Beach. She wanted to participate because my mother, her grandmother, Sue Milk, is a now 7 year breast cancer survivor. We walk for her. This is a fantastic way to raise money for such a worthy cause and spend time with your family. My sister, Susan Milk Grady, has joined us each year and we are looking forward to her son Michael jumping in next summer. This summer, our third, sees my 7 year old daughter Sarah participating for the first time as is my husband Mick. Thank you so much for donating and may we see breast cancer as a disease of the past.
LISA, CENTERVILLE

We are involved with Against the Tide to honor our mother--Susan--who fought breast cancer for 10 years before passing away in May. Our whole family is participating this year and we walk for an amazing person who was our mother, wife, gramma and friend. This is a family oriented, uplifting event for such an important cause. Join us any way you can by donating or signing up to participate.
LISA, CENTERVILLE

Hi, This will be my first Against the Tide and hopefully the begining of many more. I live on Cape Cod with my family. I saw an advertisment for Aganist the Tide in a local store and was immediately interested. A special woman in my life (my moms best friend)was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. The title of my page "The Strong one.." is because of her. She had her stem cells flushed, chemotherapy, and radiation before going into remission in late 1999. The cancer came back 2000 in her lung. More chemo then back into remission in 2002. Since then she has also dealt with knee surgery, neck surgery, blood infection, stenosis of the spine, a blood clot in her heart and pneumonia. She is truly a stong woman in my eyes, not once did she ever think to give up or feel sorry for herself. I always wished this horriable disease never existed. All the years of pain and suffering she had to endure were not necessary. I will walk and kayak for her as well as other family and family friends that have beat the cancer and for those who unfortunatley did not. Thanks for the help.
MICHELLE, CENTERVILLE

This year I am getting involved in this cause for two reasons: one to be a part of an organization I believe in and second, to be frank I have two breasts and would like to keep them around. I have been personally touched by breast cancer as a close relative just had a radical double masectomy in April. The dramatic decision to take both was made as a way of preventing the chance of spreading. While I am just starting to become educated about this topic at age 25 I feel all young women need to be!
LINDSAY, CHARLESTOWN

Hi all,
Thanks for looking at my personal page. This is a great cause and a well done event. I'm looking forward to it.
My fund raising goal is $150. I appreciate any support you are able to extend. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Lots of Love!
LAURA, CHARLESTOWN

Yes, it is that time of year again. As most of you know, once a year I participate in an event to raise money for breast cancer. A very close friend of the family died of breast cancer at the early age of 49 and this is my way of hopefully being a part of finding a cure so that none of you lose a love one to this horrible disease. Against the Tide is a fundraising swim, walk and kayak to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Now in its thirteenth year, Against the Tide brings together families and individuals of all ages to fight breast cancer. Wish me luck and hopefully I don't roll over and end up in the water HAHAHA
MONIQUE, CHEPACHET

I did it!! I may do the one in August if I am going to be up here in New England.
PATTY, COHASSET

This year, the whole family is participating again - Kathleen will be swimming for the sixth year in a row, and Richard, Peter, and Julia will be walking for the fourth year in a row. This year, Kathleen's mom, Ann, is joining us on the walk for the first time, and cousin Mary Hosie will be walking for the second time. Please sponsor us, and help us support the work of MBCC and the Silent Spring Institute.
KATHLEEN, CONCORD

Hi, my name is Kristin Osborn and I'm a child and adolscent therapist and founder of the Family Alliance Network, LLC. I've worked with many children and families that have struggled due to the consequences of breast cancer. I want to do anything I can to particpate in preventing breast cancer. Please make a pledge so that we can all work together to stop the pain of this disease. Thank you!
KRISTIN, CONCORD

This is my first year paricipating in this event. Like many of you, I know too many women who have had to fight this disease; from my mother, aunts, great- aunts and now one of my closest friends. I hope you will help me raise money for this worthy cause and be part of helping to find a cure. I am looking forward to the walk and hope to make it an annual event. Thank you for your help. Any amount is apprecitated.
CHERYL, CRANSTON

I plan to complete the 3 mile walk again with my sister Lynn. I hope I can raise at least $500.00 for this needed cause. Please help support me by pledging any amount. Every dollar is appreciated and together we'll stop this disease from affecting other loved ones. Thank-You, Cheryl
CHERYL, CRANSTON

I used to be a competitive swimmer and I wanted to use my experience where I can help raise money for women with breast cancer. I want them to know that there is hope and that they will not be alone in this fight. That there will be people right there beside them helping and showing them their support. I want them to always keep hope alive.
COLLEEN, DORCHESTER

My mother has been working with the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coaliton since 1991,shortly after her diagnosis of breast cancer. She works with a woman by the the name of Susan Atkins who is the communications director for the Against the Tide event. Susan organizes meetings for the Statewide and Cape Cod commitees. She helps to post posters and has a database that tracks where the committee and volunteers post posters as well. Susan and her friends have raised a lot of money for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and have worked hard for the Against the Tide event each year. I along with my friends would like to walk in honor of this wonderful woman who is battling this dreadful disease. I want to support my mom and all the women who work so hard for this important event and especially Susan Atkins. We want to show Susan that we support and honor her for working so hard for all of us so our generation will be less likely to have as many people being diagnosed with breast cancer as we have today.
CARA, DORCHESTER

Dear Friends and Family: I am writing to tell you about an extraordinary event that I am participating in and to ask for your help. On Saturday, June 21st, 2008, I will join hundreds of others in Against the Tide, a one-mile, open-water fundraising swim to benefit Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's work in the fight against breast cancer. Now in its sixteenth year, Against the Tide, has become a powerful and inspiring day of hope in the fight against this devastating disease. The money raised by Against the Tide supports the MBCC's work of organizing and coordinating diverse efforts to prevent, combat and ultimately cure breast cancer, which threatens the life of one woman in seven. The MBCC will share a portion of the proceeds with Silent Spring Institute, a nonprofit research organization that conducts innovative scientific research to study associations between breast cancer and the environment. This year, my goal is to raise $200. Please help me reach it by pledging me to participate in Against the Tide. Whatever the amount, your donation will go a long way towards providing hope for a healthier future for all women. Thanks so much for your support, and for joining me in the fight against this terrible epidemic. Sincerely, Ellie P.S. All contributions are tax-deductible. Please make your check payable to Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and mail it to me in the enclosed envelope no later than June 1st.

Hi all! I am participating in this swim event again to raise money for the Breast Cancer Coalition here in Massachusetts. I did it previously in 2003 and it was great, with lots of money raised and a fun morning swim in the pond. Please help me raise my pledge goal! Thanks!!!
DAVE, EAST FALMOUTH

We are calling ourselves team Sackett for my family who have lost from breast cancer. This walk will be dedicated to our loved ones we have lost, and everyone in the world who has to suffer from it.
JEAN, EAST FALMOUTH

I am participating in this event to help support and raise money for research and prevention awareness of breast cancer. Unfortunately all of us care about someone who is diagnosed with this disease so I want to do anything I can to help. Also being a woman is reason enough to help and support this cause.
LISA, EAST SANDWICH

I'm taking on the challenge to do both the swim and the walk for breast cancer awareness. I know if you look at me, you'd scoff and say "she can't do it", but I've herd that way too much over the years and i love being able to prove people wrong. I personally have not been touched by cancer, but i've known many friends and extended family members who have lost someone to some form of cancer. I can't imagine the pain of that, and i want to do my part in making sure that no one will ever have to suffer from it.
KATIE, EAST SANDWICH

Thanks for your support.

On Saturday, August 15th, 2009, I will join hundreds of others in Against the Tide, a one-mile, open-water fundraising swim and three-mile recreational walk and Kayaking event to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's work in the fight against breast cancer. Now in its 17th year, Against the Tide, has become a powerful and inspiring day of hope in the fight against this devastating disease.

The money raised by Against the Tide supports the MBCC's work of organizing and coordinating diverse efforts to prevent combat and ultimately cure breast cancer, which threatens the life of one woman in eight.

This year, my goal is to raise $1000.00 by competing in the kayaking event again. Please help me reach this goal by sponsoring me to Kayak in Against the Tide. Whatever the amount, your donation will go a long way towards providing hope for a healthier future for all women.

Thank you so much for your support, and for joining me in the fight against this terrible epidemic.

Sincerely, Steve Mulligan
STEVE, EASTHAM

I've been thinking of walking in this event for the last several years in memory of my sister Wendy and for others I've known or know w/cancer. This year for several reasons I decided to do this walk......for the memory of Wendy, for all of those w/cancer or who had cancer, and for myself to live a healthier life style. I know times are very hard for many w/the economy the way it is and for this reason I picked this walk w/a small amount of $150.00 to raise. I'm asking 15 family members and friends, if at all possible, to donate $10.00 to this important fundraiser. The money raised will go towards prevention, education and research of Breast Cancer. If you choose not to donate or can't donate, I hope you'll still take a moment to look at this site...maybe, you'll learn something you didn't know..... or just getting this e-mail might remind you to do a self examination. I will think of Wendy, others I've known or know w/cancer and all of you as I walk and see all of the Natural Beauty of Nickerson State Park this Aug. 15th. Thank you. With Love and Friendship, Melissa
MELISSA, EASTHAM

Our family is among the lucky ones to have been untouched by breast cancer and because of that, it is with humble gratitude that we all do what we can to help other families become as fortunate as we are. To be able to say "No, breast cancer does not run in our family" is not taken lightly. With your support and encouragement, I'll jump in and do what I can. Thank you.
PEGGY, EASTHAM

I am parpicipaping in a walk with my aunt sarah my friend ali and my mom.I am doing this to raise money for breast cancer and to have fun.I am also doing this for my grandma who died of cancer.
OLIVIA, FAIRFIELD

I am participating to show my dedication to community service. My grandmoher passed away from breast cancer when I was very young and I have always regretted knowing her. This is a way I feel I can make a difference.
SUSAN, FAIRHAVEN

I am participating in this event because I have a friend who has been batttling this disease for years. Trudy is the stongest person I know. She has been through so much and still has a great attitude. The money we raise will be used to make women aware of the causes of this disease. I have changed a lot of things in my life since joining this organization. The information they have provided to me has made me aware of the everyday things we do that put us at risk. We need to support the efforts of the MBCC as they perform research to find out what needs to be done to prevent the next diagnosis. In June I raised the minimum of $150.00, this time around I would like to beat the minimum. We all have friends, co-workers and family who have faced this terrible disease. We have seen what it can do firsthand. I ask that you help me in my humble effort to prevent the next generation of woman from confronting this terrible disease by pledging what you can.
BARBARAJEAN, FAIRHAVEN

This is my first time participating in an event like this. Hopefully it will be the first of many. I've lost both my parents to different forms of cancer, my Mom to lung cancer that traveled up her spine into her brain in 1995 and my Dad to throat cancer in 1999. My Aunt was diagoned with breast cancer in 2006 and had a full mastectomy on her right breast. I'm doing this in memory of those I have lost and for those who are still fighting. You have my heartfelt thanks for all your help.
WENDY, FALL RIVER

I am participating in this event for many reasons. I lost my aunt to lung cancer years ago and witnessed my girlfriend's uncle die from pancreatic cancer in 2004. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and had a full masectomy on her right breast. Seeing her fight through this inspired me in many ways! Finally, I am doing this for everyone I have lost and for everyone who will have a battle with cancer in the future. Hopefully in the future the fight will not be as hard for some as it was for others!
KEVIN, FALL RIVER

There are many reasons I would like to take part in the MBCC. However the main reason is to fight for a cure. My best friends Mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and had a full masectomy on her right breast. She has helped me in many ways through the years and to help on her behalf would be great. My father in-law is now in remission from Colon Cancer. My grandfather had multiple areas of Skin Cancer. Hopefully some day soon the C-word will be no more! God Bless!
ROBERT, FALL RIVER

Greetings! Thanks for taking the time to visit this site. I will be participating in the one-mile swim at the Against the Tide event in Brewster, MA on August 20th. My goal is to raise $250 to support the work of the Mass. Breast Cancer Coalition. I am participating in this event so that others may beat this disease and live to swim, run, laugh, and love another day. So that, one day, no child will ever lose their mom to breast cancer. And, so that our daughters may grow up and learn of breast cancer as a disease that once was. Please give what you can and I will do the rest of the work! Thanks.
SUE, FALLS CHURCH

While vacationing in Cape Cod I will do this one mile race. Then, I will rest and relax!
VAN, FALLS CHURCH

On Saturday, August 15 I will swim in the one mile recreational swim at Nickerson State Park, Brewster, MA. I enjoy recreational and competetive swimming and this event is a way for me to use my skills to raise money for a good cause. Women in my family have been afflicted with breast cancer. Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is looking to PREVENT breast cancer. Please support my commitment to help this cause.
NICK, FARMINGTON

Please join me in supporting this important Coalition (and Silent Spring) and their efforts to prevent breast cancer. While so far blessed with good genes, I am so aware that this can affect any of us. Cancer certainly has affected my family and the lives of my friends, and prevention is the best way for us to turn the tide. Thank you.
KITTY, FLORENCE

For victims of breast cancer, for survivors, for the women and men in my life, for my children and their children, I have chosen to participate in this event. As a member of the Red Fern Reike and Massage Therapy team, I feel that our beliefs parallel those of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Fortunately, I have only known one breast cancer patient and she is a SURVIVOR! But I realize that this is a widespread problem, and includes not only women. Please pledge and support us-- and just imagine how comical this kayak "race" will be. (No, I have never kayaked before....rowed, but never kayaked. Hope to get lots of practice in before August...but then I "hope" a lot of things....") Thank you for your interest and support!
SUE, FORESTDALE

Thanks for you interest and support of this event that will benefit a very worthy cause. I am happy to be swimming to raise money for a local organization that is dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. MBCC is unique because it seeks to research and identify the environmental links to breast cancer. Thank you in advance for your support.
KATHLEEN BRYANT, FRAMINGHAM

Dear Supporter, If you have made it this far you are more than halfway (the same feeling I will have in the middle of my second event!). I'm participating in this fundraiser in honor of my mother, Carolyn, and my godmother, Carol. Both are breast cancer survivors, and both are inspirational women. After the couraged they have each displayed, the support they've given to each other, and the lifetime of encouragement they've bestowed upon me, the least I can do is swim a mile, kayak 2, and walk 3. If you could please help me to reach my goal in this "first leg" of the race, the fundraising portion, I would be most appreciative. Thank you, in advance, for any contribution that you are able to make. All my best, Betsy

Hi, friends. I am swimming this year for several reasons: I am swimming for the cause. I am dedicating my swim to our friend, Ellyn and to our sister-in-law, Kathy. And, I am swimming for the simple joy of swimming and my love of the water. I hope to make a real splash at this event!

Mom and I will be swimming as a team in the 13th annual Against the Tide fundraiser. We have spent many hours in the water together and are looking forward to swimming at the Hopkinton State Park this summer. I will be swimming for my great friend and mentor Carole and Mom will be swimming for friends Diane and June. We have set a goal of $500 (which we hope to exceed!) and are extremely grateful for any contribution you have to give. Thank you for helping find a cure!
MOLLY, HARTFORD

Cancer has afflicted my family for generations. Both of my grandmothers had Breast Cancer,my father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, and I have been a Breast Cancer Survivor for four years and five months. When I was diagnosed I received such support and comfort from friends, family and the medical profession that it has become my goal to give back in any way I can what I received. Please help me reach my goal in helping other breast cancer patients become survivors too.
SUSAN, HARWICH

I swim like crazy to keep myself healthy, perhaps I can help someone else too! Thanks for supporting the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Jennifer

Breast cancer has touched my life many times with friends and family who have valiantly fought this battle. I participate in these events in honor of my friends, colleagues, my sister, Jouette, and my Aunt Lois. Your support in the way of prayer or monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.
CYNTHIA, HARWICH

We are Team JB and we are walking, swimming, and kayaking to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. We are participating in the name of a colleague and close friend who I am happy to say is winning the battle! Your support in helping us make a difference in the lives of those afflicted by the disease will be greatly appreciated.
PEG, HARWICH

I am participating in this event as I know several women who have successfully fought back against Breast Cancer at a young age ... Felice Pelosi, Carol Lowd and Ellen Berman. Also, my former boss, former U.S. Senator Edward W. Brooke, has battled breast cancer and been a wonderful advocate for awareness of breast cancer in men. If these friends and many like them can have the courage to fight this terrible disease, I can find the courage to ask a few friends to donate to the Mass Breast Cancer Coalition's worthy efforts and to do my best to finish the swim which is a BIG challenge for me!! Thanks to all who support this event and MBCC's fine work. Kathleen Hagan
KATHLEEN, HARWICHPORT

My name is Alexandra Murphy and I am creating a team to honor Ingrid Eikinas, a close family friend diagnosed with Stage Four Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She continues to battle this cancer and research is a key factor to her fight. I am currently serving as an intern at the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. The prevention of Breast Cancer is an extremely important cause to me so making a team for the Against the Tide events is imperative. Please help us end this devastating disease for future generations.
ALEXANDRA, HINGHAM

My very special friend from high school, Skimmy, was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 14th. She has four boys, ages 2 to 10, and is only 38 years old. Skimmy has a very severe and fast growing type of cancer and is currently involved in a study at Dana Farber. Every time I turn around, someone I know or am acquianted with has been diagnosed with breast cancer. My father died of pancreatic cancer. I have had several other relatives die from other types of cancer. I support MBCC's practical efforts to stop cancer before it starts. This swim is providing me with a special way to feel empowered against this horrible disease. I am dedicating my swim to my very dear friend, Skimmy.
MICHELLE, HOLLISTON

I know that I am one of the lucky ones, diagnosed early with breast cancer with access to some of the best treatment available. Here I am 6 1/2 years later, alive, loving my life partner and my life, and blessed with great relationships with family and friends. Livin' and swimmin' are two of my favorite things! I swim for myself, for Barbara, for Hester, for everyone grabbed by the fist of cancer. We're demanding, LET US GO!
LAURIE, HOLLISTON

It is my honor to be able to participate in this event. I am joining this event to honor the life of everyone who has, in any way, been touched by this disease. Please join me in helping the battle against breast cancer.
ANNE-MARIE, HOLLISTON

I walk 10-20 miles per week, and I would like to put in some of those miles for an important cause.
CHRIS, HOPEDALE

As a wife, daughter, teacher and friend it is important for me to honor the women who have been touched by cancer and the devoted families and friends who have supported and loved those women through each day. On behalf of all the extraordinary moms and grandmas I have been blessed to meet through baby yoga and Montessori classes, and because I hope that our newest generation of girls will not grow up in a world where breast cancer threatens their health, their family, their future or their dreams, I am honored to participate in the MBCC's Against the Tide event. Thank you in advance for any donation you can offer. Come cheer on Team Sweet Pea on June 28th at Hopkinton State Park! Namaste, Alexandra

Hello, This is my second year participating in Against the Tide. It is a fundraising swim, walk and kayak to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Now in its thirteenth year, Against the Tide brings together families and individuals of all ages to fight breast cancer. At this time breast cancer affects 1 in 7 women and the largest hit population is the over 52. I know each and everyone of us has known someone who has gone thru this. The more we can raise the faster we can find a cure. I thank you all for your support. Your Friend, Laurie
LAURIE, HOPKINTON

Let's continue to support the work the MBCC does and change the future for generations of women. Thank you for pledging to Team Sweet Pea!

I am participating in this event to raise some funds to assist in the battle to find a cure for breast cancer. Thanks for viewing my "Against the Tide" Pledge Page. When I was 8, my great aunt died of breast cancer. When I was 23, her daughter also died of breast cancer. More recently, numerous neighbors and friends have been diagnosed and successfully treated for this awful killer. When swimming for the MBCC Against the Tide fundraiser, I think about the day we understand the causes of breast cancer and its prevention. - Mike Manning

I am participating in these events to help bring awareness and contribute funding to finding a cure for Breast Cancer. Over the last eight years (and more to come), I personally have gone through numerous tests and procedures related to worries of breast cancer. Even still, I have a lot of worries and questions. I have two young daughters and want them to grow up knowing what this is all about. I believe awareness is the key and would love to be a part of the answer...Jen
JENNIFER, HOPKINTON

I have been wanting to participate physically in one of the local breast cancer awareness fundraisers but have not been able to due to doctors orders to stay off my feet as much as possible. Well, I was intrigued when I saw one I could participate in by kayaking only. I have always enjoyed kayaking with my family...this was something I could do! Some of my friends are doing the three mile walk and didn't have anyone to do the two mile kayaking part...thought this was a perfect fit. Too many of my friends and family members have been affected by breast cancer, it was a time for me to finally make my own contribution, physically and financially. Now all I need to do is find a boat for Saturday and hope for good weather! I thank you for taking the time to read this and if this is something you would like to be a part of, please sponsor us as we participate in The Against the Tide 2007 to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Every little bit helps.

MBCC organizes and coordinates efforts to prevent, combat and ultimately cure breast cancer, which threatens the life of 1 in 7 women. MBCC will share a portion of the proceeds with Silent Spring, a non-profit research organization that studies the links between breast cancer and the enviornment (that is what I love about this organization!!) We invite you to join in, too, and help us reach our fund raising goal of $150. No pledge is too big or too small!! If you choose to make a pledge, you may send a check (made out to MBCC) to us at 292 Wood St., Hopkinton, Ma 01748, or pledge on here online. Thank you for all you support!!! This is the 5th year that I have participated in the ATT swim. In the past, this was solely because I am a competitive swimmer and triathlete. This year however, two women I know have been undergone treatment for breast cancer. The strength these women have shown is an inspiration and makes this year's swim even more important to me. Please donate whatever amount you can. Thank you for your support!

"To those who know Joseph (Morrissey) and me, you will know that both of us lost our sisters to breast cancer. My mother also died of breast cancer. I will be participating in an organized swim on Saturday June 20 at Hopkinton State Park. Provided is a link for those who you can make a pledge."
JOHN, HOPKINTON

While I have been fortunate enough not to have been touched by this in my family I have many friends who have. For those who are still fighting the fight and for those who have tried valiantly but are no longer with us, I want to show my support and do something to help affect the future for all of us. On August 15, 2009 I will be participating in the walking portion of Against the Tide and I am asking for your support. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated.

My daughter and I would like to do this together to raise money for breast cancer. We have done the walk in Boston for many years and have decided we would rather do something on the Cape. My sister had breast cancer and had a mastectomy several years ago and is a survivor, we do it for her.

With your help last year, I was able to raise over $700 to help fight breast cancer. This Saturday, August 19th, I will be participating in the annual Against the Tide event to raise money for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC). The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s hard work impacts women beyond the borders of the Bay State. At the national level, MBCC advocates for increased funding in areas such as research investigating environmental and cosmetic links to breast cancer. They also participate in making recommendations for funding priorities. The money you donate will help women across many generations and state lines. In the last year, a close friend’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer demonstrating that the war against breast cancer rages on. Too many lives have been taken and too much suffering has been experienced. Help me in making this the year where lives and suffering can be spared.
CHRIS, JAMAICA PLAIN

This is my 12th year swimming for Against the Tide to support the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. This has become a shared event between family and friends and I hope we can keep our tradition going and growing to support the MBCC. I love to swim and I love swimming for a cause which affects so many. The MBCC funds important prevention research on the environmental factors implicated in breast cancer in addition to taking an activist and advocacy role for fighting the breast cancer epidemic in Massachusetts. Please give through a pledge or participate or both! Thank-you for your support. -Elana
ELANA, JAMAICA PLAIN

I'm really looking forward to this swim. I have felt so powerless in the past when I learned that a close friend, loved one, or acquaintance was diagnosed with breast cancer. This fundraising swim is an incredible opportunity to actually do something to fight breast cancer. I'm swimming for all the women I have known who have dealt with this disease. I know that the courage, stamina, and motivation I need for the swim is only a tiny fraction of what it took for them to fight this disease.
ESTHER, JAMAICA PLAIN

Last year we were happy to finish. This year I hope to finish a little sooner.
ESTHER, JAMAICA PLAIN

I’ve never walked three miles, swum a mile and then kayaked two miles in one day before, but I’m gonna now! And now you can put your money where my mouth is; PLEDGE and see me go! I have a lot of reasons for doing this fundraiser. In 1967 my mother died of breast cancer and I’m often told by family members about how important it is that I get mammograms, and I do. But, in spite of the fact that two women in my family have had breast cancer, I’m not convinced that my genes are what really puts me at risk. One’s bodily environment has to be right for cancer to grow. Either your body is fighting cancer or it’s not. And the natural environment that that body—my body—finds itself in can also fight or cause cancer. I can’t change my genes. (And for all I know I don’t have too, maybe all the cancer in my family is caused by a toxic environment.) but I can balance my internal environment with Traditional Chinese Medicine and I can fight for a cleaner, healthier natural environment. Pharmaceutical-pesticide companies invest millions of dollars to develop treatments for cancer. But because my body and soul cannot be truly healthy in toxic world, my money goes to looking for causes. I support this organization’s quest to find the environmental causes of breast cancer and hope you will too. Thanks. Daria Casinelli, Lic. Ac.

Life is stressful enough without having to worry about lumps, lumpectomies, biopsies, chemo, and radiation. My idea of the perfect summer day includes a swim. Against the Tide is the perfect opportunity to swim with a clean conscience. I'll be doing one of my favorite activities and supporting MBCC in the search for undeniable environmental links to breast cancer at the same time.
MARTHA, JAMAICA PLAIN

I'm doing this walk in solidarity with all the women who have or will have breast cancer. I hope I can count on your support.

Our mothers, Anne and Esther, died of breast cancer and we are survivors of breast cancer, for we consider it a family disease. We want to work for prevention and elimination of the causes of breast cancer. Supporting the MBCC is the best way we know to do that work. This is our second year in this fundraising event.
ESTHER, JAMAICA PLAIN

Year 15 and I still love this event and thank you for your support along the way. I think Breast Cancer should be much more preventable and treatable and I appreciate this way of being active myself while I raise awareness and money.
MAURA, JAMAICA PLAIN

Since I was in middle school and my maternal aunt Judy z'l died from breast cancer, I've been alert to the impact it has in the lives of my family and others. However until this year, it has been a more distant shadow, motivation for screening and health choices but not something dwelled on as I had immediately after my aunt's death. Then, I learned that a dear friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer that had already spread to one lymph node and another who had been in remission for years had gotten the news that her cancer was back and had spread to her bones. These two beautiful vibrant women, Sarah and Allison, inspired me to take action. To stand for better funding for research into causes and cures. My participation in this event is dedicated to Alison, Sarah and in memory of my aunt Judy. Please join me by pledging to support the Breast Cancer Coalition and the Against the Tide event.
ANDREA, JAMAICA PLAIN

I can't wait to dive into the water at Nickerson State Park for the fifth time. Though the water has been downright chilly, I've started my training swims in Provincetown. I love to swim and this is the best way I know to fight against breast cancer. Several of my close friends have battled breast cancer. I'm swimming to support them and all women facing this horrible disease. I'm swimming in honor of their strength, courage, and well-being -- and in memory of those who did not win the battle. I hope you will join me in supporting MBCC to prevent breast cancer.
ESTHER, JAMAICA PLAIN

We cannot find a cure for breast cancer fast enough. Everyone seems to know someone who has suffered with this disease. Personally, my own mother is a breast cancer survivor and her courage has been inspiring for her family. In addition, other relatives on my side and my husband's side have had breast cancer. Now with two daughters of my own, they should not have to grow up fearing this disease. I am honored to participate in such a worthy cause. Thank you for this opportunity.
CHERYL, KINGSTON

This is my second year. Last year I participated with team Old Navy, This year I will be with my son Jonathan, just doing the Kayak event.
TOM, KINGSTON

It's something people think won't happen to them or anyone they know, but with statistics saying 1 in 7, chances are that it may, and as our team knows, can happen. In 2008, we watched another loved one go through heart-breaking struggles, painful treatments, and gratefully, triumphant success in her battle over breast cancer that ravaged her body and her spirit. This year we dedicate our participation to celebrating her life and the lives of the others in our life that have been affected by this disease that seems to know no boundaries. Let's hope that the incremental changes we enact within education and research will have monumental effects on the disease we battle against.
PAULA, LEOMINSTER

Thank you for viewing my page. I'm a first time competitive swimmer who is swimming in these 2 events, in honor of my cousin Connie. After a 21 year battle with Breast Cancer, Connie lost that battle on March 10, 2009. I am also swimming as a tribute to all who have dealt with or who are dealing with Breast Cancer. I let too much time go by without getting to know my own cousin, Connie. Please, don't make that mistake. Time is but a fleeting moment and those whom we feel connected to - is truly what's most important in life.

I first became aware of the MBCC several years ago when my friend,Terry Croteau was told by her oncologist that she could no longer do the Against The Tide swim.Terry and her daughter, Courtney had been doing the swim since Courtney was eleven years old. In order for Courtney to continue to do the swim she would need an adult to be in the water with her and I was recruited. We swam together that year joined by my daughter,Allyson who is one of Courtney's best friends. This became our tradition for the next three years.Sadly on May 9,2005, Terry lost her long and courageous fight against breast cancer. This year I am being joined by Gene and Arielle who will join a group of Terry's closest friends to walk in her memory.Thank you in advance for supporting this cause to stop the epidemic of breast cancer.
RHONDA, LEXINGTON

Friends, On August 20th, we will be kayaking in the memory of Sally's friend, Terry Croteau, who was a big supporter of Mass. Breast Cancer Col. and to honor Janet's mother and mother-in-law who are both BC survivors. Would you please consider helping us to fight this disease that has effected each and every one of us? You can pledge here or mail us your donation. Janet and Sally
JANET, LEXINGTON

This is my first MBCC swim, as a member of a large group of friends swimming and walking in memory of Terry Croteau. We plan to pool our pledges to make a really big impact, just as Terry made in all of our lives.
NANCY, LEXINGTON

A year ago my friend Terry Croteau lost her long battle with breast cancer. Terry and I met when our daughters were in the same kindergarten class. We spent a lot of time together over the years as public school parents, soccer moms and most recently as parents of Clark University students. At a time when most of us were directing our energies towards the typical joys and challenges of family life, Terry faced the additional challenge of battling cancer. She was a survivor, weathering numerous recurrences, a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy - all with a steely determination and irreverant sense of humor. Those of us lucky enough to have known her have been permanently enriched and will always remember her strong back and broad smile. On June 24th a group of us are walking for the MBCC in her memory. Terry was an annual participant in the Against the Tide swim for many years. We will be swimming or walking as "Terry's Team" to honor her memory. Hopefully, she will be smiling down on us, or at least getting a good laugh at our expense!
MARILYN, LEXINGTON

"Team Terry" is a group of family and friends of Terry Croteau who was dedicated to raising money for the Against The Tide event since her daughters Courtney and Julie, were 9 and 7 years old. When Courtney was 9 years old, she swam the mile with Terry at Walden Pond where the Swim was held and has continued to do so almost every year. Courtney and Julie are now 22 and 20 years old. Terry died in May 2005 from Breast Cancer and her friends have joined Courtney, Julie and her husband Gerry in supporting the MBCC. We recently held a cookout at the Croteau home to celebrate Terry and as a fundraiser for Against The Tide. We hope to join all of you for a wonderful day on the 23rd in order to help "make a difference" in breast cancer prevention.
TEAM TERRY: GERRY CROTEAU, COURTNEY CROTEAU, JULIE CROTEAU, RHONDA BLACK, GENE FOLEY, ALLYSON BLACK-, LEXINGTON

We know far too many people affected by cancer. This year, I will be part of the solution, by participating in Against the Tide. A long time friend, Kathy, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, and although she will be first and foremost in my mind, as I paddle my kayak across the lake at Hopkinton State Park, on June 21, I will be pulling for all women.
LYNN , LEXINGTON

There are five women I know well who have suffered from breast cancer. Two of them died from it. Two of them are 5 years cancer-free. One of them caught it early two-years ago. It's everywhere. For each woman who suffers, there are many family members and friends who grieve, anguish, and worry. I have three daughters, and I would like to see the probability of getting breast cancer decrease in their generation. I'd like to see the odds improved for survival. Why am I kayaking for breast cancer? Because I can.
BETH, LEXINGTON

Terry's Team has been expanding, adding young people who bring energy, heart and hope for the future. We participate in the spirit of Terry Croteau, who managed her breast cancer from 1993 until her death in 2005 at the age of 54. She was an avid supporter of the MBCC through its Against The Tide fundraiser for many years. We gladly continue this support, as we hope for progress in the prevention of breast cancer. We are proud to be partners with all who take this cause to heart!
GERRY, LEXINGTON

When Terry could no longer complete the mile swim, she asked my wife Rhonda to do it for her. Rhonda has been swimming ever since along with Terry's daughters, our daughters and me. Terry is an unbelievably strong and positive force and I always feel as though it is her and not me swimming this event.
GENE, LEXINGTON

I have decided to swim for breast cancer funding beacuse of all the women in my life. It is a great opportunity for me to dedicate myself achieving a physical goal, while at the same time helping stop a horrible killer.
PATRICK, LOWELL

This is the third year (and counting!!) that I am participating in the Against the Tide 1-mile open-water swim. I am excited to participate in an event that brings together so many great people to help support a wonderful cause! It is truly a fun and exciting event. I know that my family and friends have been affected by cancer and I want to do my part to raise money for research and treatment. Wish me luck!!
ALISON, LYNN

Against the Tide seems like the perfect way for me to support a cause I believe in, breast cancer prevention, while doing something I love to do -- SWIM! Like many of us, my life has been personally affected by breast cancer. I hope that by challenging myself to swim a mile I can inspire you to get involved in this meaningful cause.
ANN, LYNNFIELD

My family and I will be participating in this fundraising event on Aug. 19. I plan to swim 1 mile in the event. Thanks for your donation to support breast cancer research. - Cathy
CATHERINE, MALTA

I am participating in this event in hopes to inspire many others to do the same and fight to prevent breast cancer. We do not have to wait until a loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer to make a difference. I strongly agree with the MBCC and Silent Spring Institutes' mission; PREVENTION IS THE CURE. Only all of us working together can make a difference, and the time is now. We cannot wait until the ratio is 1 to 2. Please join me and help spread the word to prevent breast cancer.
DIANA, MANSFIELD

For those of you that do not know, I am a breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed in 1980, at the age of 24, the national statistic was 1 in 11 women. The rate of incidence has increased dramatically. It is now 1 in 7! While I wholeheartedly support the medical research and treatment options that have been developed for women and respect the fundraising efforts for those goals, I believe we need to find pathways to prevention. I thank you for any amount you can pledge. It is tax deductible too! Peace, Paulette
PAULETTE, MANSFIELD

In 1975 a woman's lifetime risk of developing breast cancer was 1 in 11; in 2005, it was 1 in 7. What is causing this dramatic increase? (www.mbcc.org) I want to help find out, because I am a woman, and care for others. Together we can make a difference. Your support is greatly appreciated!
JANAINA, MARLBOROUGH

Hello there, Adam W. Burch here! Yes, yes, after Diane's brilliant run of the Boston Marathon this year to raise money for Children's Hospital, I was feeling a little "out-studded" in the house. So, after our friends from Las Vegas informed us that the Aussie hubby was doing this event during their upcoming visit, I had no choice but to step up and put my swimming chops to the test. One mile, chilly open waters off of Cape Cod, all to benefit something near and dear to my heart ever since sixth grade (maybe fifth, but I can't recall clearly noticing back then. . .)--count me in!! So, if you could pitch in a little spare money to help me raise the $150 minimum, I would be much obliged. Thank you, and SAVE THE TA-TAS!!
ADAM, MARSHFIELD

As some of you may know, my mother passed away five years ago after a long battle with breast cancer. My maternal grandmother also lost her life at a young age to the disease. My 12 year old daughter, Julia, and I will be walking together in this local event. It is one of the few that allow youths to actively participate. It is a small step but a step nonetheless in helping to prevent the disease. We would love for anyone interested to register and join us in the walk this Saturday at Nickerson State Park. Or, please take a moment to consider a pledge...every little bit helps. Many thanks, Susan
SUSAN, MARSTONS MILLS

I chose this event because my grandmother dies of breast cancer and i would like to help prevent others from losing their loved ones. If you would like to help me in the cause you can either walk or u can help me raise the 150$ I need to participate in the ivent by donating.
JULIA, MARSTONS MILLS

Last year, a group of us from Old Navy Boston South district raised over $3000 (including the company match money) for Against the Tide. We had such a great time for a great cause that we wanted to do it again!
ERIN, MARSTONS MILLS

I am planning to walk three miles on August 16th to celebrate two years to the month that I have been cancer-free. I am glad to say that I am one of 2.3 million survivors in this country. I hope that this organization will have a part in some day reducing the number of women who get breast cancer. I walk In honor of survivors and those in treatment, and in memory of those who are gone.
GINA, MASHPEE

Hi All. I see the Against the Tide event as an opportunity to support breast cancer prevention research, as a tribute to those brave persons who are survivors of the disease, and as a memorial for those victims who have battled the hardest of battles and sadly, lost. Most of you know that my sweet sister, Toni-Lee, has gone through the anguish, both emotionally and physically, of being one who has struggled with breast cancer. She has shown tremendous bravery and strength and has come through this ordeal in marvelous condition. My hat is off to her and I wonder how I would have handled such a challenge. (Yes, breast cancer is NOT gender specific and men can also be diagnosed with this disease though women are generally considered more likely to have to endure this struggle.) ANY donation you can make is welcome, and ANY amount, however small, will be welcomed! Sincerely, Mark Cerulli
MARK, MASHPEE

THIS IS MY THIRD YEAR PARTICIPATING IN THE AGAINST THE TIDE WALK TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER AND RAISE AWARENESS. PREVENTION CAN STOP THIS DISEASE IT SEEMS AS IF EVERY YEAR SOMEONE ELSE I KNOW AND CARE ABOUT IS TOUCHED BY BREAST CANCER. THIS YEAR I AM WALKING TO HONOR MARY PERRY, A CO WORKER OF HERITAGE AT FALMOUTH, THE BEST ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY ON THE CAPE. MARY HAS JUST COMPLETED THE CHEMO THERAPY PORTION OF HER TREATMENT AND IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN RADIATION TO BATTLE THIS DISEASE. SHE IS A STRONG WOMAN AND HAS HAS AN ADMIRABLE FAITH IN GOD AND HUMANKIND. HER SMILE AND POSITVE ATTIUDE LIGHT UP THE ROOM. MARY FINDS A BLESSING IN EACH NEW DAY AND SHE INSPIRES OTHERS TO BELIEVE AND BE STRONG. PRAISE GOD, RIGHT, MARY? ON AUGUST 15 I WILL BE WALKING AT NICKERSON STATE PARK TO RAISE MONEY FOR A GREAT ORGANIZATION AND MAYBE SOMEDAY OUR DAUGHTERS WILL NO LONGER HAVE TO FEAR THE WORDS "BREAST CANCER". TWO YEARS AGO I WALKED TO HONOR GINA HOOTEN, WHO IS NOW A 3 YEAR CANCER SURVIVOR. LAST YEAR I WALKED IN HONOR OF MAGGIE CORRIEAU, EXECTUTIVE DIRECTOR AT HERITAGE CURRENTLY BACK AT THE HELM AFTER HER BATTLE WITH CANCER. THANK YOU FOR ANY THING YOU CAN DONATE TO HELP IN THE FIGHT TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER.
DEBRA, MASHPEE

I am particpating in the kayaking for MBCC event to help raise funds for research for prevention and cures for breast cancer. My aunt Toni-Lee has undergone treatment for breast cancer and I am relieved that she is doing so well.
ADAM, MASHPEE

I am participating in the kayaking MBCC event to raise money for research and cures for breast cancer. My aunt Toni Lee has undergone treatment for breast cancer and we are relieved that she has responded so well to this care.
ADAM, MASHPEE

Too many beautiful people are lost to this vicious disease. I am simply trying to do my part to help the cause.
JENNIFER, MASHPEE

I am participating in this event to ensure that we don't forget how prevention can make a huge difference. My good friend and next door neighbor Gina, detected her cancer early and was treated successfully with chemotherapy and radiation, she is now 2 years cancer free! I walk in honor of her and of all those who did not have the educational awareness of early detection and prevention.
DONNA, MASHPEE

Team Red Fern is made up of a very special group of people. Each one effected by cancer in some way. For some of us it is loved ones who have passed on and others are survivors. On one hand , the ripple effect of cancer and its destruction are vast. On the other hand, the spirit, determination and pain of those who perservere for the common goal of one day making cancer history are enormous.
JACQUELINE, MASHPEE

Within the last 5 years, 4 of my wife's aunts have been diagnosed with breast cancer. So, I've decided to swim Against the Tide. I would be grateful if you could pledge to support my team. Thank you! Matt Goldberg
MATTHEW, MAYNARD

Martha urged me to do this event. I'm a climate scientist who sees many negative implications to environment toxins.
MATHEW, MEDFORD

This is my 3rd year doing the MBCC one-mile swim. I love this event because it supports the Silent Spring Institute. I've been an advocate for the environment for years now because of how it can impact our health. ............................................ I believe so strongly in this, that I’ve recently started my own business helping people convert their homes to naturally-based personal care and home care products for better health. The products we use to clean our homes, brush our teeth, wash our hair and make-up our faces can all have a significant impact on our health. Switching to naturally-based alternatives is good not only for our own health, but also for the health of the environment. ............................................ I hope you'll help me raise money for this important cause. ---- Thanks, Patricia
PATRICIA, MEDWAY

Hello, This is a fundraiser i attempt to do every year since it first began. I love to swim, and this is my way to honor my mother and try to help raise some monies towards a really great organization. I think the work of MBCC and Silent Spring is remarkable and this fundraiser is something i look forward to doing each year.
KAREN, MELROSE

A ONE MILE swim ---yikes! but I'm happy to try if it helps raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. We've gotta solve this disease for ourselves, our (grand)mothers, aunts, friends, and of course, our daughters. So many of you were incredibly generous with your sponsorship when I did the Avon 3-day in 2000 (together we raised $5k!). PLEASE don't feel obligated to contribute again! your prayers for good luck will be enough! But if you would like to donate, this website provides an easy way to make a pledge online. Every bit helps! Thanks so much. With all our love, Team Duplin --- Danielle, John, Alexandra, and Sophia
DANIELLE, MELROSE

We are a team of three entering the Competitive Swim. I am a Mathworks employee and Marjorie Whalen and Danielle Petroni are members of the Clark swim team. I am swimming in honor of my mother who was a breast cancer survivor for over 25 years. She passed away in 1998.
BETH, MELROSE

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am fortunate enough to be a healthy person; but, sadly, my life has been touched by cancer through family and friends. I have decided to join the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and do my part in helping to raise money for research to help find a cure for this devastating disease. On June 24th I will be joining hundreds of other individuals in a three-mile walk along the nature trails at Hopkinton State Park. Oh, by the way, there is also a swim this day, but I'll stick to dry land! Swimming is for people who can swim.....I can't swim, but I can walk! This is my first time ever taking part in a fundraiser and I am asking for your help in achieving my goal. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help with the research to find a way to cure this devastating disease that strikes 8 out of 10 women! Thank you all for your encouragement and support! Sincerely, Marlene
MARLENE, MENDON

Thanks for viewing my site. Like so many, my family has been affected by breast cancer. I chose to become so involved with this event and the Mass Breast Cancer Coalition because their focus is PREVENTION. As a mom to a beautiful and vibrant 8 year old daughter, it terrifies me that this disease threatens 1 in 7 women! I am so proud to be part of this event in its 17th year- it is an inspiring day of hope in the fight against this disease. In honor of the mothers, daughters, nieces, wives, sisters and friends in your lives, please help! NO amount is too small! PREVENTION IS THE CURE!! Love , Lisa

Hi, everyone - Thanks for visiting our "Against the Tide" donation page. Jackie, Michael, Emily, and Matthew are all walking for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition on Saturday, Aug. 18 here in Brewster. We're walking to honor friends and relatives who have courageously fought breast cancer, most especially, Jackie's sister who's currently battling the disease. We'd be so grateful if you could help us with a donation of any size. Thanks! The Dowdings

My sister and I lost our grandmother to breast cancer when we were just little girls. The thing that bothers me the most is the amount of time that she lost with her family. She spent many of her later years fighting the cancer and passed away before she had the chance to see her grandchildren grow up. Breast Cancer is an EPIDEMIC that will affect 1 in 7 women. Our team is dedicated to raising money to participate in the Against the Tide events to help fight this disease. As an intern with the MBCC, I have seen what the organization is capable of and am proud to do my part and help fight for PREVENTION! What a fun and meaningful way to come together in honor of families all over who are affected by breast cancer. Please help us to participate and show our support! The money raised by Against the Tide supports MBCC's work of organizing and coordinating diverse efforts to prevent, combat and ultimately cure breast cancer. Thank you so much for your time and your donations! Lauren

I am so excited to be swimming this event for the fourth year in a row. I am swimming it in honor of women everywhere who are faced with the challenge of fighting breast cancer. You are all my heros.
CONNIE, NATICK

I am swimming in this event again this year because I believe in doing every thing we can to PREVENT this pernicious disease from claiming more women. I believe in being proactive in my life and this event helps us all be more proactive in defending against this disease. Thank you for visiting this page!
CONSTANCE, NATICK

Since the first time I did this swim three years ago, the number of women I personally know who have battled breast cancer has grown significantly. For those who have battled and triumphed, for those who have battled and lost, for those whose battle is yet unknown, and for all our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters, I shall swim, my dear friends...swim 'til I can't swim no more....well, actually, until I complete the mile :) Any and all support will be greatly appreciated! If financial support is unavailable, I would always love a cheering section on the beach!! Please feel free to come on down :) Thanks and love to all! P.S. Joyce - As always, this is for you, my dear friend.
TERRI, NATICK

Hello to all my friends and family. On June 21st, I will be swimming the 1 mile competitive swim in honor of my good friend Gail Kirkman who has won her fight against breast cancer! So many of my friends have been affected in one way or another by this horrible disease and I want to do my small part to help fight the fight! Please help me reach by goal by pledging on this website. Thanks in advance for your donation! Grace

Hi Everyone, Like many of you, we know too many women who have been affected by this disease. This year, Maureen and I have decided to try our best to make a dent in the fight against breast cancer. We're asking for your help in reaching our goal for this event. Any amount you can pledge would be greatly appreciated, not just by Maureen and me, but by all of the women who might get a chance for a fair fight thanks to your generosity. Lots of love, Linda and Maureen
LINDA, NEW BEDFORD

Our daughter Sophie and I did this a few years ago, with Pam Franks, who originally told us about it. This year Allan and our son Nathaniel are joining. We are swimming/ kayaking in memory of Suzanne's brother John Peter, who died of cancer in 1999, and also three other good friends who died of cancer since then, as well as our young colleague at the Gallery, Jennifer Bossman.
SUZANNE, NEW HAVEN

This will be my 9th year and 13th swim in the Against the Tide events. I began swimming for exercise when I turned 30, 20+ years ago. In that time several relatives and friends were diagnosed with breast cancer, including my mother and two first cousins. One of these cousins has since secumbed to the disease. I am thankful for the research from organizations such as the MBCC in helping these loved ones and other women who have been diagnosed. Every contribution will count. Whatever you can contribute to me or to any of the other participants will help all of our loved ones diagnosed with this deadly disease. Fortunately, breast cancer is not as clearly the death sentence it once was, directly as a result of the contributions to research that events such as the Against the Tide Swims provide.
DAVID, NEWTON

Shoshi and Ruth are participating in the MBCC swim-a-thon together this year because we want to do something to help fight breast cancer. Some of you may remember that we participated in a previous swim-a-thon in California, and you may have supported us then. In the last 5 years we've witnessed too many more of our friends fight this disease. Please join with us by sponsoring us on this 1 mile swim.
RUTH, NEWTON

Jayne helped so many people. She was a power of example and a wonderful woman. She had an uplifting spirit and was a powerhouse of faith in the best and worst of times. She would have wanted her memory to live on in the form of helping others. Please help us to sponsor the saving of other lives in her honor.
AMY, NEWTON

I swim for my health. I swim Against the Tide for other's health, so that we may know a world without breast cancer in my lifetime.

Dear Friends and Family - thanks so much for supporting me and making a donation for this important cause. I deeply appreciate your generosity. This is my fourth year of Against the Tide. Last year I was a top fund-raiser - please help me reach for the top again. Best to all, Matt

I swam this event a few years ago and felt great about raising money for an important cause while doing a sport I love. I swim this year to support friends in treatment and to remember those who succumbed to the disease.

My name is Samantha Hill. I am 26 years old and it frightens me that Breast Cancer is becoming such an epidemic. I am participating in this to raise funds that can be used to help the ongoing research.

Against the Tide is a fundraiser to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Specifically it is looking for ways to PREVENT breast cancer so no individuals or family has to know the pain of this disease. We will be swimming one mile with the Great Harbors team at Nickerson State park on Saturday August 15th to raise money for this great cause. Our goal is to raise at least $150.00 per person. If you would like to help please let me know. Thanks Great Harbors Team
KYLE, NORTH ANDOVER

Currently I am a healthily wife and mother of two adorable little kids. However as life has taught us this can always change in the blink of an eye. Taking part in this walk is just my little way of trying to help individuals who have or are living with this terrible monster. Recently deciding to make a change in my own personal life style, has introduced me to a new manner in which I can try and help others, walking for a cause. On June 24th, along with hundreds of others, I will attempt my first three-mile recreational walk in the annual Against the Tide fundraiser to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Please help me reach my goal by sponsoring me to walk in Against the Tide. Whatever the amount, your donation will help provide a healthier future for all women. Thank you for taking the time to read my personal page and support me in this new adventure. I am hoping that this walk with be the first of many more in the future. Thanks again, Michelle

Spending time on the water allows me to think about the beauty of life and the joy of living. Paddling for a Cure puts some focus on a dreaded disease that needs attention. Let's keep on paddling until we have a cure.... Dan Ginsberg, Northborough
DAN, NORTHBOROUGH

This is my third year swimming in this event. This year I will be doing the recreational swim, rather than the competitive swim because of being pregnant. Although my personal goal will be different this year in terms of completing the swim, I am still committed to the benefiting organization and the work that they do on behalf of all women. MBCC is dedicated to supporting research, building community awareness about environmental links to breast cancer, and creating political change. It is a good organization, a positive event, and a great cause. I have lost a grandmother to breast cancer, two of my mentors and an aunt have successfully fought against it, and a number of other women I know have lost the fight. I appreciate any support you are able to offer me, the MBCC, and millions of women dealing with breast cancer.
SUSAN, NORTHBRIDGE

Hi Everyone! Well, here I go again! This year I have decided to participate in this worthy cause. We all know someone who has been touched by this disease and the sooner we find a cure the better! I have committed to raising a minimum of $150...and your support would be greatly appreciated. And/or....if you care to join me in one, two or all three of the events....that would be even better! Thank you bunches, Maryann
MARYANN, NORTHBRIDGE

Before the 2004 swim someone caught me offguard and asked why I had names written on my body. I answered " The people who had to fight this disease are the real heroes, We're just here to swim and have fun and support our loved ones." Some how my statement ended up in the CAPE COD TIMES and I don't think I could say it any better now. Please pledge me (:
ERIN, NORTHVILLE

I was treated for early stage breast cancer in September 2006 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center's Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Hanover, NH. I was fortunate to have great care and tremendous support from family and friends. I look forward to sharing the experience of my first triathalon with my sisters and possibly my daughters, nieces and nephews and my mother in anticipation of celebrating my 50th birthday and one year of being cancer free.
JAYE, NORWICH

My mother passed away from a stroke a year ago. She was a breast cancer survivor. I am participating in this event in memory of her - my own little memorial. She always liked to contribute to my fund-raising for this worthy cause.
JAMES, NORWOOD

I am participating in this swim as a memorial for my mother, Kay Hurley, who was a breast cancer survivor. She was a lovely woman and helped me through life in many ways. Her memory still motivates me greatly to do good things, and it makes me smile. My mother always liked to contribute to my fund raising efforts for this cause, even before she was diagnosed. Please help me to battle against this disease. Jim Hurley

This terrible disease has affected my family and many friends. The need is great to prevent breast cancer from affecting so many lives. I thank all of you who donated last year. I will walk again this year on August 18th, "Against the Tide", for this fight against Cancer. Your pledge will spur me on.
WILLIAM, ORLEANS

This is my fifth year participating in this terrific event. My Grandmother and Aunt died of Breast Cancer, and my sister Susan is a survivor having contacted this terrible disease several years ago. So I am doing this for them and the many, many women who are touched by Breast Cancer. I hope we can someday Cure Cancer! I participated in the "Mile Swim" my first year and finished in 45 minutes, and then decided to switch to the "Two Mile Kayak" Challenge race three summers ago, I had fun, and never let up and came in second place, so three years ago I thought I would try it again, the terrific gentleman that beat me the year before was there again, we paddled side by side the entire two miles, and I managed to find a little more strength at the end. We finished in about 20 minutes. I wasn't able to participate two summers ago, but after winning last year,I am back at it again. I appreciate your pledge no matter how large or small the amount. It is the caring of individuals like you that will provide the momentum to the needed research to help save lives.

This is my fifth year participating in this amazing event and son Austin's second year joining me to walk on this day. Fortunately for Austin, this disease has not touched his life. But he knows that this is an important event and he is helping others. My son is fortunate not to have been touched by this disease. He was not alive when my mother went through the shock of being diagnosed with breast cancer, having surgery and follow up treatment. He sees her alive today, 30 years later, and doesn't know how lucky we all are. I watch families that I know bravely face the challenges of having their mother deal with breast cancer and the treatments. I still go to my annual mammogram wondering - will it be this time. I still feel angry and hopeless that there continues to be no way to stop it. But, through this event, joined with hundreds of women, men and children, I feel hope and I feel strength. This year we are joining my good friend Ali Crockett and her team in hopes of raising even more money for this cause. Please join us by pledging as much as you can to support MBCC find ways to PREVENT breast cancer. Be empowered, fight the fear and helplessness - please join me in this benefit by giving your pledge. You can pledge online or you can mail it to me. If you can come to Nickerson State Park on August 16th, I would love to see you there. It's an amazing event. Thank you for all your support. Karin
KARIN, ORLEANS

I am participating because I am at high risk of breast cancer and because my sister is a survivor (7 years). Because I'm high risk, so are my daughters.
CAROL, ORLEANS

I'd like to help others who, like me, are at high risk of developing breast cancer, and to increase awareness for all women.
DONNA, ORLEANS

I've been looking for reasons to take out a new kayak I bought and thought this was perfect. A fun day of kayaking while helping out a great cause at the same time. I hope to raise money to do my part in helping find a cure. Please join me by pledging my 2 mile kayak paddle. Thank you. John
JOHN, PLAINVILLE

Thanks for visiting my MBCC page. If you've come this far, you probably already know that I've committed to participating in the MBCC Kayak Race for Breast Cancer that means spending the next few months training and fundraising and then kayaking two miles on June 25. I'm required to raise a minimum of $150 to participate, but I plan to raise much more! To do this, I need your help and the help of many others - to reach my goals, and I'm hoping that I can count on you to be part of my support team. Thanks again for your support!

Hi Everyone~ (Thank you to everyone who has pledged already! I have surpassed my goal, with one week to go, I have raised my fundraising goal!! Thank you for all the support) Hope this finds everyone enjoying a safe, happy, and healthy summer! As we are all grateful for our health, it is important to remember those who are suffering from illnesses such as breast cancer. Saturday August 20th, I will be participating in the "Against The Tide" charity swim on Cape Cod sponsored by MBCC. This organization researches the environmental root causes for the breast cancer epidemic. I consider myself fortunate to participate in this event. As a swim instructor, former lifeguard, and swim team member, I knew that this was the best way I can aid in the battle against cancer. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. Please email me with any questions you may have: Laura_Tassinari@hotmail.com Enjoy the rest of your summer! Thank you ~ Laura

Participating in the Against the Tide fundraising event to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is so important to me for so many reasons. I am an 11 year breast cancer survivor. I am walking in celebration for this. I am walking in memory of my best and dear bosom buddy friend Coleen who would have been 48 years old on the day of this event. She was my inspiration, my strength, my soul sister. I am walking to raise awareness and to raise funds to cure breast cancer. I am grateful to be able to participate with so many wonderful people.
MARTHA, PLYMOUTH

I have only been kayaking for about a year but am totally hooked on it. I think this will be a fun event and a great way to support Breast Cancer Research. I hope you will sponsor me, a little or a lot, every penny counts! Thanks
SAMANTHA, PLYMOUTH

I want to benefit the cause and have a good time, whether by land or by water.
CATHY, PROVIDENCE

I'm swimming in memory of my mother Jessie and in honor of the many wonderful women in my life who are breast cancer survivors including my sister in law K.C. and my friend and mentor Ann. This disease has touched many families and mine is no exception. MBCC is doing vitally important work to find a cure and to prevent breast cancer from occuring. I am blessed to have the strength and skill to swim, and I am thrilled to be able to do my small part in this tremendous fight! Please join me on August 15th and swim with me or just cheer me on. Please consider pledging to support me in this swim for a terrific cause!
SARAH, PROVINCETOWN

I am walking in memory of my Nana who suffered two bouts of breast cancer and also in honor of my mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2007.

Here is a sample Personal Pledge Page. Feel free to browse around to get a sense of how it works and perhaps get some ideas for your own page. Notice that there is no actual money collection on this page. For anyone who sponsors me, it is still my responsibilty to collect the pledge directly. Feel free to try sponsoring me here - just to try it out. I promise I won't come knocking on your door to collect!

Here is a sample Personal Pledge Page. It is a really fun and easy way to ask your friends and family for support. Dixie and I have been practicing for the Kayaking Event. We are glad to be supporting MBCC. Prevention is the Cure!

I have just finished walking 39.3 miles in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston this past weekend. What an exhilarating experience! One of the themes throughout the event was that together we can make a difference. I decided then to continue my volunteer efforts to help to find a cure for breast cancer, and to help those afflicted with the terrible disease. While reading the paper today, I found an article on Against the Tides breast cancer awareness events. I knew that this was my next chance to continue the fight against breast cancer. So here I am, again, ready to fight. Please help me by supporting my efforts to raise money for this worthy cause. Thank you so much.
AMY, QUINCY

A hero is someone who has courage, nobility, and strength. Being a hero is something many of us secretly wish we could be. It sounds so romantic, so thrilling. But there are so many who became'silent' heros in a way that was far from romantic or thrilling. Those who's lives were turned upside down when the ugly face of breast cancer stared them down. My cousin faced this monster. But she didn't let him win. He may gave got her breasts, and for a while, her hair, but he never, never got her spirit, her soul. My cousin stood up to breast cancer with such courage, nobility and strength. And she did it with such class. I have a fear of swimming in lakes. I've just turned 60 years old, and I'm a bit scared of life ending too soon, too. But you know what? If my cousin, my hero, Linda Grant, could conquor breast cancer with so much grace and determination, then damn it all, I can swim in that lake. So, Linda, this one is for you!! I love you. You rock!!!!

Hi! Thanks for visiting my Against the Tide Pledge page. I first learned about this event through a work colleague. I have been walking in the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Breast Cancer walk for about 8 years now in Concord, NH. This event is quite incredible and moving. Now, living South of Boston in Quincy, I have wanted to increase my involvement in breast cancer research and prevention in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is my first foray into a triathlon style event. I'll be doing all three events: the mile swim, two mile kayak and 3 mile walk. I look forward to challenging myself and supporting a wonderful cause so no family has to experience breast cancer. I appreciate your support, whether it is in hugs, a swift kick in the butt when I complain, encouraging e-mails or a donation. Be Well, Katy
KATY, QUINCY

Each one of us knows someone who has faced this disease in one form or another. In my family, my aunt was diagnosed over 5 years ago and today remains cancer free. However, my younger sister was recently diagnosed with DCIS and underwent a partial mastectomy. This cause has always been at the top of those that I support but in recent years it has become intensely personal. Women are living longer but every day, someone still dies of this disease. We MUST find a cure for breast cancer - so that our mothers, sisters, daughters, partners, aunts, grandmothers, cousins and friends have a better chance of living longer, healthier lives.
DEB, QUINCY

Well, here we are again one year later. I am a one year breast cancer survivor. All my tests came back clean. Life is good and we are moving on. We thought we would try kayaking this year and see how it goes. So if you could pledge any amount, it would be greatly appreciated. This is a cause that is very important to us and even $5. would help. Thank you, Alice and Terry Langton p.s. Join us if you would like. Last year was fun and so nice to be outside in nature for a good cause.
ALICE AND TERENCE, RANDOLPH

I am doing this for multple reasons. The first is that I have had someone close to me who had breast cancer and so I believe it is a great cause and this is one way I am able to help. The second reason is to also have fun while getting in shape with my friends and hopefully to make some new friends.
SARA, REVERE

I've completed 3 marathons, 12 triathlons and a couple of 32 mile walks (The Great Saunter) however I've never entered any of these events in conjunction with a Charity. The weekend of August 15 I'll be on Cape Cod for our annual Family Reunion. I can't think of a better way to kick off the weekend then doing this fun event (one mile swim - 2 mile Kayak and a 5 mile walk) for this very deserving cause. Any donation either large or small would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to pass this on to anyone who you think might want to contribute. I'm sure my family is much like yours in that we have all seen cancer up close and personal. Thanks again for your support Rich Ps: If you wish to mail a donation please send it to: Rich Sundermier 74 Locust Ave Rockville Centre, NY 11570 Make checks payable to: Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC)

Hello, Thank you for viewing this page! As many of you know, fighting breast cancer is extremely important to me. Since last fall, I have been training with a swim coach and will be swimming with my good pal Emily Wilcox on August 20th. My 1 mile swim celebrates not only the courage of Allison Bladt, but Holly Flanders and Lynn Mann as well. All my love, Massachusetts branch of Allison's Angels Amanda Bladt
AMANDA, ROSLINDALE

This past June marks my five-year anniversary as a breast cancer survivor. Please help me celebrate this milestone by supporting MBCC and the Silent Spring Institute's powerful work to prevent, combat, and ultimately put and end to this disease!
LIZ, ROSLINDALE

This is my third year participating in this MBCC event. I have lost several friends to breast cancer, and I will be swimming to honor others who are struggling against it. I am very appreciative of being in good health at this time. I love to swim, and swimming to raise funds for this good cause -- research into breast cancer prevention -- seems like a wonderful thing to do. Will you pledge to support this good cause? Pledges of any amount, no matter how small, will be appreciated. If possible, please pledge using a credit card on this webpage. Many thanks for your support!
JUDITH, ROSLINDALE

Against the Tide is a fund raising swim, walk and kayak to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition.I lived through advanced stage breast cancer.Part of my story follows.
On 9/11/2001, I was delivering oil to homes in Maine. I heard the news of planes crashing into the towers as I drove alone in a tank truck through Cumberland. Looking into the sun-filled, deep blue sky, I tried to make sense of it all. I felt an urgency to be with others.
What was my life purpose? I enrolled in an MSW Program at University of New England to pursue my dream to work with others to leave the world a better place. This question had filled my years and took on new meaning in the winter of 2002 when I was diagnosed at 33 years young with two types of breast cancer, one of which was already in my lymph nodes.
Why did I have cancer? Was it genetic, environmental, or social factors? My grandfather had died of cancer as a young man. My mother had cancer as an infant. I grew up in Maine surrounded by granite. I worked and lived around toxins that contained carcinogens-cleaning products, paint, exhaust and fuel oil to name a few. Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is looking for ways to PREVENT breast cancer so no individual or family has to know the pain of this disease. I found the “Why me?” to be less important than “will I live?” and “How?” Fortunately, I am with others. In relationships with my partner, family, friends, and so many others, I find my life has purpose and meaning. I had the privilege to receive treatment and oncology care at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Today, I have the honor of working with others committed to ending discrimination and oppression. As the Director of the Triangle Program, I am committed to providing compassionate care to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender individuals seeking treatment for mental health, substance abuse and/or trauma issues.
In the summer of 2009, I plan to celebrate my 40th birthday walking and smimming at Against the Tide in Hopkington and Brewster. From now until then, I will be training and fundraising for this cause in hopes of making a difference with people like you.Against the Tide brings together families and individuals of all ages to fight breast cancer. This is living!
MELISSA, ROSLINDALE

Against the Tide is event which I have planned to participate in as a personal challange to myself, and in honor of the women I personally know this year who have been diagnosed with brest cnacer. This is just something I can do in support of them and their battles. I am hoping to do all three activities, but my confidence level is not quite there. I invite you to support my efforts with a financial pledge, at what ever level you are comfortable with, to the Massachusettes Breast Cancer Coalition.
SUE, SAGAMORE BEACH

I need to get in shape, although I don't have an image of myself. I'm in for $20.
MATTHEW, SALEM

When I was in my twenties I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer, I had surgery and it was removed but I remember being so scared. I lost my Grandmother to Pancreatic Ca. I watched her suffer in pain and wishing there was something that could be done to help her more. I have other family members and friends that have also had some form of Cancer. I want to be able to help raise money to help stop this deadly disease. I have decided to take part for the first time in this great event in memory of my Grandmother Stefanie Cote. Thank you.
STEFANIE, SALISBURY

I am 18 years old and my life has been touched by cancer. When I was 4 years old my grandfather died of cancer. Then my neighbor who was like another grandmother to me died of breast cancer. Two years ago my papa was diagnosed with cancer, he later died. I would love to help find a cure for cancer.
ERIN, SANDWICH

We all know someone dear that has been affected by breast cancer. But there is hope, and events like this go a long way in turning that hope into a cure. My daughter has inspired me to be stronger, run faster and aim higher, and has changed my life forever. To thank her and honor all the "girls" in my life, I am participating in this benefit. Please support me in this project - every little bit helps! Thank you.
KRISTINE, SANDWICH

I am joining my sister Cheryl this summer for our third Against the Tide walk. We are happy to say that our mom has been cancer free for twelve years now & I am walking in her honor.
LYNN, SANDWICH

I'm participating in Against the Tide this year because my younger sister Karen (not that much younger - 11 months!) got a diagnosis of breast cancer last summer. The mother of four young children, she went through the whole nine yards - chemo, radiation and mastectomy - and is now doing great. It wasn't easy. In fact it was pretty scary. After seeing what Karen went through, I felt very strongly about doing more to PREVENT BREAST CANCER. Prevention is a big part of MBCC's mission, so I signed up to swim a mile in the Against the Tide event. Swimming this distance will be new for me. But meeting this challenge is nothing compared to what Karen went through, so I'm going for it! I would appreciate your support as I help MBCC raise funds to PREVENT BREAST CANCER!
CYNTHIA , SANDWICH

Team Susan is raising money to fight breast cancer in honor of Cape Cod Times News Editor Susan Moeller, who is currently undergoing treatment for the disease, and Assistant to the Editor Susan Eastman, who completed her treatment this past year and is participating in the event. News reporter Cynthia McCormick Hibbert is participating for the second year in a row and will swim, kayak and walk. Last year she swam the mile in honor of her sister Karen Porcaro, who was treated successfully for breast cancer. Meg Burton, features and business editor, is putting on her sneakers and walking for the Susans. Susan Eastman, is a talented runner who contributes to Fit Chat in the Cape Cod Times, will be doing the walk and kayak events. Patty Bangert, page designer, is joining us on the walk, ramping up her usual two miles to three in honor of Susan. Since Susan Moeller is an avid swimmer, we figure she'll be with Cindy in spirit for that event (right, Susan?). Yup, every time Cindy swallows a glug of pond water, she'll be thinking, "This one's for you, Susan!" We're so happy to be raising money to PREVENT breast cancer, so our colleagues and loved ones can be spared this disease.
CYNTHIA , SANDWICH

As much as I want to do nothing on my upcoming vacation, I am too much of a type A personality not to have some project. So I am swimming to raise money for breast cancer. I now have a purpose and a goal for my swiming more than just to feel good and have a great body. So to participate and get a free T Shirt I need to raise $500 in the next week. So I am reaching out to my kind and generous friends, family and associates to help me out. If your generoisity to help raise money for cancer is not enough, its pay back time. I contributed to every school fundraiser, charity request, campaign and such over many years. I have never asked for anything in return. So if I can get 20 people to each donate $25 (or 10 people at $50 each!) I can spend 30 minutes in a cold lake early on a Saturday Morning wearing only a Speedo. The visual itself is worth the $25. So thanks for supporting me.
MICHAEL, SANTA BARBARA

You may know me well, not so well, or perhaps not at all but first -- thank you for considering to pledge me. I'm now living near Boston and, with my sister Janet, am participating in this charity swim to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition to raise both $$ and awareness to help address this common cause that we share together across the nation. Nearly everyone, if not everyone, has been or will -- unfortunately -- be affected by cancer in their lives. The MBCC group is a very spirited team that volunteers significant time and effort to lend help and support to those in need. Please join me in helping them help others.
JAMES, SHARON

I love swimming and I want to make a difference in helping to eradicate breast cancer. I am raising $150 to be able to enter this event and I hope you can support my efforts even with small donations of $1-$5. Thank you so much! In peace, Jonathan

Dear Friends and Family, My dear friend and colleague, Dr Pat Raney, and I met as medical students in 1989. During our careers, hers in primary care and mine in Ob/Gyn, we have both cared for many women who have been touched by the incredible challenge of breast cancer. We have also stood by family and friends who have faced this disease. As with all medical problems, treatment will have individual results; people will triumph over their illness and people will succumb to disease. The best way to cure cancer is to prevent it. MBCC takes a unique role in the war against cancer by focusing on the identification and elimination of toxins in our world that contribute to the occurrence of breast cancer. Please support us as we walk and kayak to raise funds and awareness for this fight! with Love and Trust, Diane

I am particpating in this event because I want to raise money for breast cancer research, and I like to swim. I hope you'll consider pledging!
SUSAN, SOMERVILLE

I first did this event in 2000 when I was looking for a challenging swim. At the time, I didn't know anyone with breast cancer. Fast forward to May 2006: the disease has hit close to home. One of my sisters-in-law was recently diagnosed, after losing her mother to breast cancer. When the flyer for this event came, I simply couldn't ignore it. I'll be swimming for her and for my niece and nephew, who - at 3 1/2 - is a joyful fish in the water.
ILONA, SOMERVILLE

Becca and I are celebrating our one year wedding anniversary by raising funds and awareness so that many more may continue to celebrate THEIR milestones!

I'm inspired to make a difference in this world. Further, I am inspired by so many women who make this world a better place; they are breast cancer survivors, they have lost loved ones to breast cancer, or they are living they are living happily ever after despite a breast cancer diagnosis. These are my everyday heroes.

Please support us in our efforts to swim, walk, and kayak our way to funding important research toward eliminating breast cancer.
MARY, SOMERVILLE

My friend Jayne was a shining light to everyone she met, including people she didn't know. Her enthusiam for life was contagious! She saw no limitations in herself or others. Jayne saw every twist and turn in life as an opportunity! Jayne believed in service to others as a way to expand personal growth. She was tireless in her efforts to serve and believed ultimately in a power much greater than herself. She passed her gifts of time and love on to others with reckless abandon. A day doesn't go by that I don't give thanks for knowing my friend Jayne the past 11 years. A friend for ever, Lisa Sarno

Last year I was unable to participate so this year I have decided to step up my donation goal. I will be organizing a fundraiser for January. I will let everyone know when and where. This fundraser event will include the talents of the Central New England Theatre Company. Thank you for your support! Tabatha Carsus
TABATHA, SOUTH GRAFTON

Over the years I have participated in many fundraisers, mostly for cancer causes. I never thought I would one day be a patient. Thanks to the great health care available to us, many can count themselves among the survivors. However the shear escalating numbers of people affected is very disturbing. My team members and I were drawn to this organization because of its' aim towards discovering a cause. We understand that everyone has a cause that is close to their home and heart and everywhere people are fundraising. We ask only that you log onto the website, educate yourself and consider pledging just $5. There is power in numbers!! Thank you very much.
KAREN, SOUTH HAMILTON

Hi, my name is Krystal and I am a 12 years old. This is my second time swimming the one-mile in open water for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. I am on the Cape Cod YMCA Mako Swim Team, and love to swim. I think this is such a wonderful event because I can do something I love and help people at the same time. I would like to swim for all of my teachers, friends, and family that have been toughed by cancer. I am making a poster to bring with me to show all the people that I am going to be swimming for. Please let me know if you have someone that you would like me to swim for or in memory of someone you love and I will include them on my poster. Last year I raised $3,200, and this year I hope to raise even more. Please sponsor me so I can raise money for the MBCC, in hope that not only a cure will be found but a way to prevent people from getting cancer in the first place.
KRYSTAL, SOUTH YARMOUTH

Welcome Friends! This year marks the third time I will have competed in the Against Tide mile swim for breast cancer. The swim is an amazing event instilling hope for a cure as well as paying tribute to those who have lost the fight. This year I am swimming in honor of two individuals who have an a huge impact on the lives of so many, Regina Meagher and Ellie Watmough. Regina, or as I always called her "Gina", was a dear family friend with unmatched compassion for her family and her career as a teacher, faith in God and a love of the ocean. Her strength in the face of unbelievable challenges that breast cancer imposed will forever stand as a standard to strive to achieve. Ellie Watmough is the mother of my brother's Fiance Amy Watmough. Though I never was able to meet Ellie, I have heard several stories of her strength while battling breast cancer. Swimming for these two great women will hopefully give hope to other families experiencing a family member with breast cancer. Your contributions will give hope to other families battling against the fight for breast cancer! Thank You!
KIMBERLY, SOUTH YARMOUTH

Thank you for pledging your support. This is my first time participating in this event, which consists of 1 mile swim. It should be a nice challenge and raising money to support eradication of breast cancer is obviously a worthwhile endeavor. I appreciate your contribution and will do my utmost not to finsh dead last!
THOMAS, SOUTHBOROUGH

This year our family is hopefully starting a new tradition. Making a differance together!!! I read about this event late last summer and thought it would be great to do. Being that the Cape is one of my favorite places ,being that our family has been touched directly by breast cancer and being that sport and exercise are a big part of our lives, we are ready for something new and fun! For many years I have participated in the Danskin Triathlon in Webster. Creating awareness and raising funds with my team from the YMCA has been a high point of my summers. The boys in my life have always been my biggest fans so now is our chance to do it all together and by the looks of the event so family friendly. Family has always been my priority and we are all so excited to see what this is all about.
MAURA, SOUTHBRIDGE

Thanks for visiting my page...Its important to me to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and to support it in the best way - by swimming!
NATHAN, STOW

This is my first time participating in this event and I'm doing it in memory of my mom, Kay O'Brien, and for several friends who have had breast cancer, as well as for all the many thousands who have been touched by this disease.
KATHLEEN, STRATFORD

This is a spirited event that I have done every year for 17 years! Please help to support this great cause. This year I invite my friends, patients, and colleagues to join our team. Anyone who joins our team and raises over $150.00 will get a Diamond Physical Therapy Associates 15th anniversary special edition T shirt! The person on our team who raises the most money will get a Diamond Physical Therapy baseball cap! I dedicate my swim to my patients who are breast cancer survivors and to five dear friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer - Maggie Bodkin, Nan Ottenritter, Amy Ellis Nutt, Joan Amory, and my high school teacher, Tiffany Corbitt.
LAURA, SUDBURY

This will be my 13th year of participating in this fine event. It started with several friends who needed additional support to get through this terrible disease and has continued in order to help all women. During the past year, two more very close and dear friends have had problems and resultant treatments. It is more important than ever to stand and be counted on to help in any way possible. I would ask that you make a pledge to the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition thru me. I have raised a total of over $10,000 over the past 12 years and will attempt, in these troubled times, to exceed $500 for the 13th time, with your help. I swam for the first 8 years. Walked and kayaked for the next two years and for the last 2, I have kayaked. I look forward to your support and to seeing you in Hopkinton to cheer on all of the participants.
STEPHEN, SUDBURY

My sister and best friend Carrie was diagnosed with throat cancer this year at the age of 40. Thankfully, she has been through treatment and so far so good, she is healthy. At the same time, it was a very painful time for all of us - one that no person or family should have to live through. I support MBCC's work to PREVENT this ugly disease, so that is why I am proud to be a participant in ATT.
SUSAN, SUNNYVALE

ANDY, SUTTON

This is my first year participating in "Against the Tide". Actually, this is my first time doing anything like this. I'm excited to be attempting the one mile swim portion of the event. The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is a great organization raising money for breast cancer research. I'm swimming for the future so that our sisters, daughters, mothers, aunts and friends never have to experience the pain of breast cancer. Please help to find a cure. Thanks for your support!
SARA, UPTON

Hi Everyone! As an MBCC intern, I am participating in ATT for the first time ever! I am very excited about the event and eager to help get one step closer to preventing breast cancer. Since becoming an intern I have learned so much about the disease and the goals of MBCC. It is such a great organization and we need all of the help we can get to continue our fight to eradicate breast cancer. My team is made up of my friends and family that are supporting both myself and MBCC. We look forward to raising money and making an impact. Any help is much appreciated! Best Wishes to all!
NIKKI, WAKEFIELD

Our niece/daughter, Nikki D'Addario, is assisting with the coordination of this event. To acknowledge those who volunteer their time and those who have been touched by this disease, we thought the least we could do is put together a team of friends and family and take a walk! The goal for our team is to raise $600 for Against the Tide. We know times are tough, but any donation you can give to help Laurie's Ladies meet their goal will be greatly appreciated.:)

Team True To You consists of two breast cancer survivors and their sisters and friends. Ellie and Jean have the pleasure to work with other breast cancer survivors fitting post mastectomy and lumpectomy patients with bras and prosthetics. We are honored to meet such amazing women and we dedicate this event to them.

Hello to everyone visiting my page! Thank you for taking the time to check it out, I appreciate it! As most of you know, I am participating in Against The Tide again this year, and looking forward to it! As a participant in the Against The Tide fundraiser, I feel that I am helping support a worthy cause to find the cure for a disease that unfortunately has touched the lives of many people that I know. Supporting research for the cure to breast cancer is important to me, and I will do my part to help as much as I can. Each year I gain a feeling of satisfaction and pride knowing that I am helping the lives of many people. If you can help me support the cause, I would appreciate it greatly! Any donation you can give makes a great difference! Thank you so much for your support! Sincerely, Sarah

My name is Jenicka and I recently lost my grandmother to her struggle with breast cancer. My nana was a very strong woman, and only a disease as devastating as breast cancer could pull her away from her family. I am going to graduate from Brandeis this May, and am so upset that she couldn't be here to watch me receive my diploma. To honor her memory (and receive credit towards my major) I became involved with the MBCC as an event and outreach intern for "Against the Tide". I have been working really hard with my great supervisor, Cheryl Osimo, to coordinate this event and publicize it. Any help you can donate, whether it be your time hanging ATT flyers, or a donation are much appreciated! Please pledge for me! Thank you!!

On August 18th I will be participating in my 3rd Against the Tide. With your help last year I was able to raise over $1000. I really appreciate all the donations and I hope to exceed that amount this year. With cancer such a wide-spread disease every little bit does help. We unfortunately lose too many important people in our lives, not only to breast cancer, but all types of cancer so we need to do our part to help. While my fund goes directly into stopping breast cancer, my overall hope is that this will help cure all types of cancer and put a stop to this devastating disease. Thanks so much for your support! Love, Jess P.S. Remember all contributions are tax-deductible. Please make your check payable to Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition.

It's been eight years (knock wood) since I had my last brush with breast cancer (lumpectomy and radiation in 2000-1) and fourteen since my first (masectomy and chemo in '95), so I'm doing this swim partly to keep healthy and partly to raise money to find a cure. Hope you'll contribute and if possible, come to Hopkinton! Anne

I have had too many wonderful women in my life suffer from breast cancer, and I am so excited to do something I love to help in even a small way to participate in finding a cure. Please sponsor me in any way you can. Thank you so much for your support!

On Saturday, June 20, I will participate as part of NESN’s team at the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s Against the Tide fundraising event in Hopkinton, MA. The MBCC, the state’s largest breast cancer organization, believes that prevention is the cure for breast cancer. At this annual event, volunteers raise money to support prevention research by participating in a swim, kayak and walk. To participate I need to raise a minimum of $150. Please consider making a donation to my personal pledge page, which can be found here (http://mbcc.org/swim/s-pledge.php?id=3653&user=clydeclan@verizon.net&pw=sclyde&). Every little bit – whether it is $1, $5 or $20 – takes me one step closer to my fundraising goal

My grand mother Marie Barrett was a victim of breast cancer. My mother Jerri Narracci and my cousin Christy McCann are breast cancer survivors. I also have numerous friends that are survivors. I am doing this event for them.

Hello to all my friends and family, Many individuals in my life have been affected by breast cancer and I thought it was about time that I lent a hand to the fight. Please help me reach my donation goal as well as support me in finishing my first competitive 1 mile swim. I need to finish the 1 mile (1604 meter = 1760 yards) swim within a half hour. TRAINING EFFORTS: 04/30/2008 - Today I swam a 200 yds untimed warm up, 1,000 yds in 24 minutes, and finished with a 300 yds untimed cool down for a total of 1,500 yds in approximately 50 minutes. I am physically exhausted today and a bit worried that I have to add 260 yards and drop my time by 20 minutes:-( 04/27/2008 - Today I swam 1000 yards in a half hour. So I need to increase my speed to include another 760 yards. Arghh... Thank you all in advance for your donation and help!! Kate

As much as I enjoy swimming, I am not a lake swimmer. But, when my swimming buddy Eileen mentioned me in her bio as "all the inspiraton she needs, even on the cold and rainy days"....I HAD to join her. We are swimming this Saturday in "Against the Tide", to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. There are many venues in which to raise money for this worthy cause, but since swimming was instrumental in my mental and physical triumph in this battle, it seemed the right thing to do. I feel this is one way for me to help make a difference for those fighting it now and so that others don't ever have to. With this swim, I think I have made the full circle of a breast cancer survivor. If you have considered donating to this cause, now is the time. Thanks. Love, Cathy

My name is Rebecca. I am 18 years old and going into my Senior year at Nauset High School. I have no idea what I want to do with my life so I'm in summer limbo avoiding making any long term decisions. I'd might as well do something useful. Also, my mom had a breast cancer scare this year. It really opened my eyes.

I am a 42 year old mom, who knows personally the effects of this disease. My Grandmother had breast cancer in the 70's and fought it with a double masectomy. Today with all the knowlegde I have gained working in the garden center industry, and now being NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) Certified, I know all to well the devastating affects chemicals have on all living things. I want to keep my kid, and others safe from harm. I truly belive in this with all of my heart. Clean up the world and we will clean up disease. nan ingraham

My mother Elizabeth was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer in1979. At that time, there was not an organization offering support or information to women who had this disease. After surgery and several months of chemotherapy my mother recovered and proceeded to volunteer for the American Cancer Society during the 1980’s. By visiting women in the hospital who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, she was able to show them that she had survived her initial diagnosis and had every intention of being fully cured. In 1991, the MBCC was founded by women concerned with the lack to attention to breast cancer and Massachusetts became the first state to declare breast cancer an epidemic. During the summer of 1993, I participated in the first ‘Against the Tide’ swim at Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts. The swim was and still is a one of its kind fund raising event for Breast Cancer research funding. Sadly, in the Fall of 1993, my mother died of metastic breast cancer, 14 years after her initial diagnosis. I continued to participate in the swim, for the next 6 years of the event. I am happy to be back this year and on Saturday, June 24th, and Saturday, August 19st, I will join hundreds of others in the one-mile, open-water fundraising swim event to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. The money raised by Against the Tide supports the MBCC's work of organizing and coordinating diverse efforts to prevent, combat and ultimately cure breast cancer, which threatens the life of one woman in eight. The MBCC will share a portion of the proceeds with Silent Spring Institute, a nonprofit research organization that conducts innovative scientific research to study associations between breast cancer and the environment.

My pal Jayne was so very loved. Personally, she taught me that to trust in God's plan and be of service was the most important source of happiness in life. Jayne died from breast cancer this past February in a very conscious way, at home with her family. My girlfriends and I miss her and love her and want to raise money and awareness in her name. Love you Jayne.
JENNIFER, WEST ROXBURY

Jayne was my good friend, we knew each other for more than 20 years. She was an amazing woman, her spirit was magnetic. I believe she was loved by every person that crossed her path. She was a true power of example. Jayne was full of life to the end of her journey. Even in her final weeks her spirituality and her postive attitude never wavered. Although Jayne wanted to live she had a kind of peace and courage in knowing that her work here was done. I'm proud to have been her friend and will keep her in my heart for ever. I know she is looking down on us and smiling her beautiful smile. Thank you for your support.
PATTY, WEST ROXBURY

Our mothers Theresa and Millie both passed away from this terrible disease and this is the reason that we are participating in the fundraiser "The Against the Tide".

This will be my fifth year participating in the 3-mile walk along with my sister, Lisa Carlon, and her family. My sons, Michael,7 and Zachary, 4 along with my husband, Todd will be walking as well. This will be their 2nd year participating. My mother, Susan MacLeod Milk, is an 9-year breast cancer survivor. Having her support means so much to us and along with being the strongest woman we know, she is also our best friend! We love her dearly.

This will be my 4th year participating in the 3-mile walk along with my sister, Lisa Carlon and her daughter, Hannah. We walk for our mother, Susan Milk who is a now 7 year breast cancer survivor. My son Michael will be 6 1 1/2 next summer and he will join us as well. This year Lisa's 7 year old daughter, Sarah, and husband Mick are participating in the walk as well. I feel such a sense of pride as I finish the walk and knowing that the amount that we all raise is going toward finding a cure for this devistating disease. By the time my youngest son Zachary is old enough to participate, we'll be one step closer!

I am a swim coach for a competitive swim team in Easthampton, MA. In addition to coaching, I myself have been swimming for years. I love the fact that this fundraiser allows me to do something I love, while at the same time helping others. We had a mom on the swim team who passed away from cancer one year ago. I am swimming in her honor and in support of her two little swimmers who now keep her alive through memories.

This will be my 11th year swimming at the Hopkinton Against the Tide event. The first year I signed up, I was there because I love to swim. The event was so moving and so well organized that I have made a point of returning every year since. I have participated in other types of fundraisers over the years, but Against the Tide was the first one that really moved me. Without being over the top, MBCC really lets you know who you are helping. I know people who have and are battling breast cancer. This year I dedicate my swim to Karen and wish her all the best. I hope that my swim and our donations will help to make a difference! If asked for my email address when pledging, use lincbax@gmail.com Thanks! Linc

I'm doing this to help a needed cause rather than sit on my fanny doing nothing, in order that cancer may be cured in the near future.

Hi Everyone! As many of you may know, this is not my first Breast Cancer walk. I have been supporting the fight for Breast Cancer for several years now, and I now have the opportunity to do it for a local foundation that needs our help the most!!! I only wish there was more that I could do. Having had several family members cursed by the disease, I am all about prevention! Which is why I am so thrilled to be raising money for the MBCC. I know how many of you can relate to the feeling of helplessness this disease has given you, which is why I am asking you to help. Not only am I walking for the cause, I am a proud member of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition Team. Meaning, I have been working hard with several Outreach Interns and our amazing Coordinator to make these events happen. This cause is near and dear to my heart! I appreciate anything you can give. Thank you for any thing you can give. xo, Megan

This will be my third Against the Tide swim, but the first after losing my beautiful, courageous, wonderful wife, Christy, to breast cancer in April. I swam without her in 2004 when an onset of double vision required us to detour to Yale-New Haven Hospital while on our way to the Cape... she urged me to go on without her and swim the next morning... which I did... on no sleep! Last year Christy joined me and my family at Flax Pond for the event. She was weak and unsteady from chemo and the cancer's advancement in her brain, and she needed help walking down to the water. But her motto was, "It's always anyone's game." She never gave up hope and never let cancer keep her from doing the things she wanted to do. In her journal, she wrote, "Miracles are all around us," and it's so very true! The miracle of Christy is all around us every moment of every day.

My name is Catherine Griffin and this is the fourth year I will be participating in Against the Tide 1 mile competitive swim. I lost my mother, Catherine Buckley, to breast cancer in 2003 after a seven year battle. She fought hard and was an example to all of us on how to be courageous. I swim this race in her memory to help raise money to fight this terrible disease that affects so many. I swim for my daughter's future. Thanks in advance for your support.

As many of you know, my dad was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer. Though rare in men, it does occur. Because it is thought of as a woman's disease, it tends to go under diagnosed in men and thus more serious. Luckily in my dad's case, he caught it earlier and he's doing well. My family and I are walking in this fundraiser to increase the awareness of breast cancer in men and in hopes for a cure for all of us and our future generations. Thanks for your support!
