Against the Tide 2001Stop the Epidemic: The Newsletter of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer CoalitionOct 01, 2001 Our ninth annual Against the Tide events were a great success. Swimmer support between the Hopkinton and Cape Cod swims, raised more than $184,000 dollars! June 23rd, early morning rain gave way to sunshine as swimmers entered the water at Hopkinton State Park. The beach was brimming with both supporters and. High fives, hugs, and congratulations filled the air as triumphant swimmers completed the one-mile swim. In total, the Hopkinton event raised nearly $130,000. Thanks to all of our supporters! We couldn’t do it without you! The top five fundraisers were Margaret Wittig, Elaine Grossman, Norma Shulman, Linda Burnett, and James Dorsey. After the swim, while listening to music provided by Star 93.7 FM, everyone enjoyed a continental breakfast generously donated by Bread & Circus Whole Foods Market and visited the information tent to learn more about MBCC’s fight against breast cancer and the work of Silent Spring Institute. Once again success was in the air on August 11th for the Cape Cod Against the Tide event held at Flax Pond in Nickerson State Park. Under cloudy skies, supporters enthusiastically cheered on the swimmers. In only it’s second year, participation nearly doubled and the Cape Cod event raised over $55,000, with the top five fundraisers being Cynthia Solarz, Lauris Khan, Terry Greene, David Stricker, and Erin Whitmore. Thank you all! WCOD 106.1 provided the music, while Costco served a delicious breakfast. Ben and Jerry’s ice cream station was a very popular spot for those cheering on the swimmers. The volunteers whose efforts helped in every aspect of producing and executing the Against the Tide were extraordinary. Folks from the very young to the very young at heart, jumped in wherever they were needed. Their enthusiasm and support for this event was reflected in the camaraderie shared among the crowded beach. We are eternally grateful for their dedication and to this event. Honorary Chairs were Olympians Sheila Taormina, who swam at Hopkinton, Clara Lamore Walker, World Champion Masters Swimmer; Dr. Jane Katz, Master swimmer and author; and Triathlete Karen Smyers.
