Going the Distance to Make Breast Cancer HistoryStop the Epidemic: The Newsletter of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer CoalitionJun 01, 2001 – 2001 NBCC Advocacy Conference and Lobby Day Over 700 advocated from around the country gathered in Washington, D.C. for the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Advocacy Conference and Lobby Day. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the NBCC’s advocacy work in Washington, D.C., participants attended 4 days of plenary sessions and workshops. Leading experts from scientific and research fields discussed new and often controversial issues in the struggle to diagnose, treat, cure, and ultimately prevent breast cancer. Topics ranged from "The Future of Breast Cancer Research" about genetic research discoveries and targeted breast cancer treatment, to "Putting the Evidence into Breast Cancer Care – Challenges and Controversies for the Future" – a heated discussion about the efficacy of mammography and its impact on mortality rates. "Unequal Burden – Social Issues and their Impact on Breast Cancer" revealed the appalling impact of ingrained cultural, racial, and sexually biased responses that affect women seeking health care. In association with the release of the NBCCF’s Guide to Quality Breast Cancer Care, a discussion about the vision and strategy for the future of breast cancer care disclosed a startling range of issues in breast cancer care. A bi-partisan discussion about "Healthcare Policy and the Breast Cancer Agenda" revealed perspectives on Capitol Hill that prepared the advocates in the audience well for their lobby day on Tuesday. Numerous workshops were conducted to advance the attendees’ lobbying and advocacy skills. On May 8th, members of the MBCC joined over 500 hundred breast cancer survivors and activists at the annual National Breast Cancer Coalition Lobby Day. The goal was to gain support for the NBCC 2001 six legislative priorities. (See sidebar) The nation’s Capitol served as the backdrop for the kick off rally that caught the attention of anyone within shouting distance! After the rally, fifteen Massachusetts advocates representing every district in the Commonwealth met with aides from Senators Kennedy’s and Kerry’s offices as well as aides from our entire Mass Congressional delegation to elicit support for the NBCC legislative priorities. This year we were the first state to have unanimous sign on by all of our State delegates.
