SPECIAL EVENTS TO HONOR MBCCStop the Epidemic: The Newsletter of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer CoalitionApr 01, 2000 The participants at the 7th Annual Giraffe Invitational Golf Tournament teed up last September to once again benefit the MBCC. The Tournament was held at the Groton Country Club and raised an admirable $6,735.00 for the MBCC! This was over $900 above last year’s amount. Thank you very much to the Giraffe Invitational Committee Ä Connie Johnson, Ruth Terrell, Gretchen Berthold, Barbara Browning, Carol Senecal and Pat Lastella - and to all of the golfers who participated. Your support of the MBCC is outstanding! In October a dozen runners participated in the Reach the Beach relay race in New Hampshire from Loon Mountain to the beach which raised nearly $2,000 to benefit the MBCC. Many thanks to Dianne Weissbach and Johan MacKenzie for organizing this ambitious effort. For the third year in a row, the Boatslip Beach Club at Provincetown generously donated $1,250 raised during Women’s Week in Provincetown this past Fall. The proceeds are shared with SSI and Helping Other Women.. A Magical Evening of Giving, sponsored by the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis, MA raised $250.00 for the MBCC on November 21,1999. We’re grateful for the efforts of all volunteers and businesses that worked together to raise this donation by selling tickets for this "private night of shopping." The Festival of (Giving) Trees held at the Elks Lodge in Southbridge in November was a tremendous success. The second annual event was attended by over 2,000 viewers in an remarkable showing of community support. Through admission to the event, the tree raffle and the silent auction, the festivities raised $15,000 to be shared by the MBCC, Silent Spring Institute, and the Harrington Memorial Hospital’s Health Education Resource Center. Many thanks to Sue Hapgood and her committee members for their continued effort to help organizations committed to conducting research and education into cancer. In January the third annual "rockin’ dance party", fully sponsored and organized by Attorney Susan Wilson as a benefit for the MBCC, was held in the Whitney Ballroom at Brookline’s Holiday Inn. There was "standing room only" as hundreds of women attended the party in the spirit of celebration and giving, ultimately raising $10,000 for the MBCC! This topped last year’s donation amount by almost $3,600. In appreciation of this exceptional fundraising effort, Attorney Wilson was presented an award in recognition of her outstanding support of the MBCC and our fight against breast cancer. Thank you again, Susan, for all of your continued support! Employee contributions through designated company payroll deductions programs are an appreciated addition and inspiration for our continued efforts to stop the breast cancer epidemic. The Susan Bristol Company employee contributions reached nearly $800 for the first nine months of 1999. Through the City of Boston Employee Campaign, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Employees’ Charitable Campaign, and the Combined Federal Campaign of the Massachusetts Bay Area, employees contributed nearly $850. Matching gifts also reflect the support of employees within our region for their selection of the MBCC as the recipient of their contribution matched equally by their companies’. The Polaroid Fund Matching Gifts Program contributed over $800. John Hancock employees payroll deductions matched equally reached nearly $1,500.Compaq Computer, Deutsche Bank America’s Foundation, Grantham, Mayo, Van Ooterloo & Company, Pfizer Foundation and Waters Corporation combined raised over $3,000. As one of the 175 organizations competitively selected, the MBCC received $800 from the American Express Volunteer Action Fund - an innovative program that awards grants to eligible organizations at which employees regularly volunteer. Sean Todd volunteered in memory of his grandmother, Mrs. Antoinette LaRocque, and a close family friend, Mrs. Nancy Swift, to work disseminating brochures and other information on the Cape in support of our programs. In December, 1999 the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition received a $17,500 grant from the KOMEN BOSTON RACE FOR THE CURE to support the production and distribution of issue papers addressing controversial topics related to breast cancer. The issue papers will present information not heard from the mainstream media -- the unpublicized side of an issue. The July 1999 mailing sent out by the MBCC on Tamoxifen, Raloxifene and the STAR clinical trials is an example of what to expect from future MBCC issue papers. We are very grateful to the Komen Boston Race for the Cure for its generous support of the MBCC’s mission to get to the truth of the matter in breast cancer issues. Published by Stop the Epidemic!
