MBCC Board of Directors in ActionStop the Epidemic: The Newsletter of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer CoalitionApr 01, 2000 Ellen Parker and Amy Present attended a legislative breakfast meeting with Senate President Thomas Birmingham in early March at which they reiterated the critical need to maintain research funding for investigation into causes of breast cancer as the Massachusetts legislature begins its arduous budget process for FY2001. Ellen and Amy also met with Senator Edward Kennedy during his visit to the New England Conference on Health Care held in Boston on March 13, where they discussed the need to increase funding for research into the potential links of environment and breast cancer. Judi Hirshfield Bartek has recently joined Dr. Susan Love’s website team (www.susanlovemd.com). She also attended the NBCC Board meeting in Santa Monica, California in January and participated in the Team Leaders program in Washington, DC earlier in March. She continues to work locally with a consortium of groups including the Jewish Women’s Coalition on Breast Cancer, Council for Responsible Genetics and members of the "Gene Team," to push for legislation which guarantees individuals privacy and confidentiality of genetic information and prohibits discrimination in insurance and employment. Cheryl Osimo has participated in many diverse panels and forums on behalf of the MBCC and Silent Spring, including a recent focus group coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in cooperation with the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry to gather input on the range of environmental issues of greatest concern to the Upper Cape community. She was a panelist, along with Devra Lee Davis, at an event sponsored by Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation entitled Exposure: Environmental Links to Breast Cancer, A Panel Presentation for Women and the People Who Love Them. She has also been a frequently requested speaker, with presentations at Wheaton College, Boston College, the Audubon Expedition Institution, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Regis College, as well as the Mashpee Women’s Club.
