Online Registration
It’s easy to register online through our fundraising partner Firstgiving. After registering on-line, you have the option of creating an online Fundraising Page. Online fundraising is very easy and convenient. You simply send emails to your friends, family, and co-workers, and if they are interested in sponsoring you, they make a donation immediately online using a credit card (the following sample fundraising letter can help you get started on creating a personalized message). You can also spread the word about your participation in Against the Tide via Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media outlets!
The Firstgiving website is well-designed for new and returning users, but if you need help on how to create a profile page or just a refresher on getting back in to your Firsgiving.com profile, please click here for detailed instructions or contact the MBCC office at 617-376-6222.
Registration by Mail
We encourage advance registration so that we can be prepared for your participation. Both on-line and mailed registrations will close on the Friday before each event at noon. Help us get the word out about your support of MBCC and your participation – consider sending around a press release, like this one, to your local newspaper about the event! Local papers love to include stories about residents and their interests and you help us reach more people about our work and event.
Families are encouraged to participate. We require all family members to sign up regardless of age. We are especially touched by the efforts of the young at this event. We encourage our young participants to fundraise to contribute to the cause however, we realize that some children are not comfortable doing this and, therefore, participants under the age of 18 may be included under a parent or guardian’s minimum donation of $175.
All participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a parent or guardian’s signature in order to participate and must swim, walk, kayak or run along with a parent or guardian. They must share a 2-person kayak with their guardian.

Fundraising and Collecting Sponsors
A minimum donation of $175 is required to participate, although we encourage participants to raise as much as they can over that minimum amount. We are pleased to offer all participants an event T-shirt as a thank you. Ask your friends, family and co-workers to sponsor you with their pledges – and don’t forget to sponsor yourself! We have made this easy for you by providing both an on-line pledge system where you create a personalized page that you can circulate electronically, as well as a downloadable pledge sheet for you to bring around to personally collect sponsors. We’ve also compiled this fundraising tip sheet and sample letter to mail or email potential sponsors to help get you started. On the day of the event, please bring your pledge sheets, any money that you haven’t sent into the MBCC office and your good spirits! Prizes will be awarded at each event for the top 3 fundraisers!
Every year we are pleased to offer incentives to individuals for fundraising efforts. Each year we have different gifts from sweatshirts, MBCC beach chairs, tote bags and water bottles. Often, in an effort to keep overhead costs down, we get generous donations for these gifts. This means that we do not always know what they will be – but we can assure you they are very cool and very popular – so please consider going that extra mile with your fundraising efforts and you will be rewarded!
Team Registration MBCC encourages friends, families and individuals to join together and register as a team, often participating to honor a special person in their lives. Teams are an exciting way to involve many individuals in one common purpose. The camaraderie also makes fundraising, training and focusing on a goal so much easier and more fun! Team requirements are:
- Team members do not have to compete in the same event(s).
- Each member of a team MUST sign up individually with the team name entered in the appropriate place on the registration form.
- Each registered team member commits to raising the $175 minimum donation to participate, or the total raised by the team divided by the number of team members MUST be $175.
Employer-matched Gifts
You may be able to double your efforts by asking your employer, or having a sponsor ask their employer to match the donation. Check with your Human Resources Department to find out more.
