31 Days Campaign

“31 DAYS Towards Breast Cancer Prevention”

Rally Pic

When MBCC held it’s first rally to end the epidemic of breast cancer in 1991, we challenged the notion that breast cancer was an inevitable disease.  Thousands of women, men and children marched in support of CHANGE towards an end of the disease – one that was affecting too many of them.  For twenty years, MBCC has continued to advocate for research dedicated towards primary prevention of breast cancer, for policies that remove breast carcinogens from our products, and against corporations that unjustly profit from the disease.

While MBCC stayed the course, dedicated to prevention breast cancer, the priorities of the movement overall changed.

PinkKFCBucket“Awareness” became the presiding breast cancer message — and more and more, the pink ribbon became the darling of cause-marketing.   The pink ribbon has been displayed on everything from buckets of fried chicken to cosmetic products and jewelry.  Many products that display the pink ribbon also contain toxic chemicals that may contribute to breast cancer, and/or come from companies who contribute very little, if any, funding from those products towards efforts against breast cancer at all.

The idea that we can “shop for a cure” took hold and the well-intentioned public was lead to believe that buying a tube of lipstick would contribute towards the fight against breast cancer.

After billions of dollars have been raised for breast cancer “awareness” through Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink ribbon cause-marketing and other means, we’re still faced with an epidemic of breast cancer, with more than 1 in 8 women risking a diagnosis, and the challenges and fear it wreaks within the families and circles of friends affected.

NOW IS THE TIME TO CHANGE THE COURSE!

31DaysLogoFor 20 years, MBCC has taken ACTION towards prevention.  This October, we’re asking you to join our 31 Days Towards Breast Cancer Prevention campaign as we shift the emphasis from awareness towards prevention.
