Early Detection Is Not Prevention

Letter to the Editor in the Boston Globe from Diane Savitzky, Board Member, MBCC

Early detection is not same as prevention

October 23, 2011

IN THE interview with Dr. Susan Love ( “Ramping up cancer research,’’ G, Oct. 17), the interviewer asks, “Detecting cancer early isn’t enough to prevent it?’’ I think we do ourselves a disservice to connect early detection with prevention. Early detection may prevent some morbidity and death, but it does not prevent cancer. If there’s something to detect, it has not been prevented.

I’m disappointed that someone as brilliant and well-respected as Love discusses prevention, later in the interview, in terms of lifestyle changes. No amount of exercise or healthful eating can counteract the carcinogens in our environment, such as car exhaust, industrial waste, and ingredients in cleaning and personal care products that we use every day. Love has a ready-made platform. I hope she can use it to exhort industries to clean up their products, and that doesn’t mean putting a pink ribbon on it.
