Michelle Porche recently completed her first year of successful treatment for breast cancer. Rather than allowing breast cancer treatment to hold her back, she is using it to bring her family together for something positive. She will participate in the 1-mile open water competitive swim with her spouse, Lisa Fortuna, at the Cape Cod Against the Tide event in Brewster, MA on August 16th.

Michelle and Lisa are active runners, swimmers, and bicyclists, and they have competed in many road races and triathlons together. Their team name for Against the Tide is “Alex’s Moms,” in honor of their 9-year-old son, Alex, who sometimes runs with them and always supports their athletic endeavors. At Against the Tide Michelle and Lisa will be swimming the 1-mile competitive swim, and then Michelle will be kayaking and Lisa will be running the competitive 10k race.

“I am participating in honor of friends who have recently been diagnosed, and in gratitude for all the doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff who provide excellent care, comfort, and encouragement to me and to so many others,” says Michelle. “I am excited to help raise money for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and their work toward disease prevention.”

Against the Tide consists of a 1-mile swim, 2-mile kayak, 3-mile walk, 5K run, and 10K run. Participants may choose one or more of the activities in any combination. There will also be a “Splash and Dash” Aquathlon option where participants first “splash” in the competitive 1-mile swim and then, “dash” in the competitive 5K or 10K run.
